Cask: Special - JDW Autumn 2012 Beer Festival

Dzuljeta Armoniene has travelled to Shepherd Neame Brewery, in Kent, to collaborate in re-creating this beer especially for this Wetherspoon real-ale festival. This red-coloured beer has an aroma which strikes a good balance of caramel, malt and hops, while the flavour is full bodied, with notes of toast, malt and sweetness, balanced by a subtle, low-hop bitterness.

Hops used: Magnum

Cask-conditioned at the Commercial Rooms, Bristol, November 2012. Deep copper in colour with a tight, off-white head. Sweet, berry fruits, powdered chocolate and toffee, leading to a yeasty, bitter finish. Ok.

Complex ale with a sweet malt aroma and mixed malty roasts in a sweet tasting red tinted ale.

From cask at Camperdown Place. Pours clear and golden deep amber with a small, creamy off white head. Aroma is roasted malty and light breadish. Sweet, caramelish, toasted and light fruity. Sweet malty and light breadish finish. A bit too sweet and simple for my liking.

One-third pint glass, cask at The Knights Templar. Bubbly, patchy surface. Amber coloured body, near-clear. Modest aroma of sweet malts. Caramel malts and burnt sugar in flavour. Sweet malty ending. Medium bodied. Very much on the sweet side (JDWs real-ale festival, London 01.11.2012).

[Cask at the Hope Tap (JDW), Reading] Deep orangey-amber with a moderate off-white head. Toast & caramel with leaf mulch. Some dark marmalade & a spicy kick. Generally sweet, but with just enough dry bitterness to hold it together, Lingering lager-y aftertaste. Overall, although its’ not really my sort of thing, it’s certainly full-flavoured and distinctive. I’ve not tried the original version of this beer, but I suspect the Sheps version is reasonably true to it - ie a lager style such as Vienna rather an ESB.

Hand-pulled pint 27th Oct 2012 in the Wetherspoons pub in Telford town centre, Shropshire. Reddy brown in colour with a white/off-white foaming head of bubbles. Strange blend of smells and flavours within this brew: malty molasses lead the way in aroma and taste but there is also a distinct hop presence throughout as well. Couldn’t get to grips with the beer really: not rich enough to carry the 5.5%ABV but not watery either. A little to sweet for its own good and although interesting it failed to excite me.

Cask at the Hope Tap (JDW), Reading - 26/10/12. Clear dark golden with a good sized white head, good lacing follows. Nose of dark toffee, sugar cane and light vegetal tones. Taste follows, malt forward, quite sugary. Medium bodied with soft carbonation and a sweet finish, a little to sweet for me. Porter ?!?!?
