Cask, Bree Louise, London. Swarthy dark brown looks. Notes of dark malts and coffee in the beak. Malty flavour with some roastiness and dark fruits. Lacking balance and on the thin side of the tracks. Didn’t really dig this one.

Craft. Clear dark red brown beer, small off white head. Smooth light palate, semi dry. Mild carbonation. Mild malts with a trace of dark toffee. Crisp mild dark fruits. Neutral finish. Fine but a little dull.

Cask at Euston Tap, London. A dark brown/amber coloured pour with a small beige head on top. Malty aroma. Tastes malty, caramel, dark fruit, some coffee detected. I couldn’t get on with this one.

Cask at CP&K. It pours deep ruby, with a decent beige head. The nose is smoke, bonfire, oak and earth. The taste is oak, wood, nut, earth, astringency, caramel, roasted malt and tangy dried fruit (raisin, cherry and plum), with a big dry finish. Medium body and soft carbonation. Ok.

Cask gravity at Nottingham BF 2007. Ruby/brown with beige head. Little bit of mintyness on slightly watery, slightly grainy beer. Fine, just a bit watery.

Cask-conditioned at what is effectively the brewery tap, the Old Tavern, Bristol 12/6/07. Dark brown beer with reddish tones, there was a slight white head which left plenty of lacing. At first sight I thought this might be a sweet HSB clone, but I was proved wrong. The aroma was of red fruit with a slight whiff of caramel. The flavours were of dark chocolate and more red fruit with a short bitter finish. A good, distinctive effort from a new brewer.
