Bourbon Barrel-Aged Angel's Share

Admin Note: There are unique entries for Angel's Share aged in Brandy Barrels, Bourbon Barrels and Scotch Barrels.

Down in Kentucky and across the pond in Scotland, distillers who age their whiskeys for many years refer to the evaporation of the spirits from their barrels as “The Angel’s Share.” We couldn’t agree more. Each time a barrel is filled, a measure of liquid seeps into the oak and is lost for good.

This striking Strong Ale is brewed with copious amounts of Caramel malt to emphasize the vanilla and oak flavors found in freshly emptied bourbon or brandy barrels. The beer spends a year in oak before it is packaged for release. The beer is 12.5% ABV and is available in 375ml bottles and on draft at inspired locations.

The Angel’s Share Story
It’s warehouse #5 built in 1886 that gets the most attention. The other four weren’t built so well and succumbed over the years. On the outside, to most #5 is a rather unremarkable white washed building. That is until they pass through the weathered doors and are easily consumed. Here in the hallowed halls it just oozes history. Inside this three story building, they find row after row of whiskey slumbering away the days until the distiller calls their name and they are called into action.

It’s a weathered building with a timeline of over one hundred and twenty years of continuous service. Looking around, there is a warm orange glow from all the wood inside. On both sides of the room for as far as your eyes can see, there are wood racks with carvings, nicks and dings. It smells sweet in here. Could that be the Whiskey breathing? Perhaps it’s the angels doing their work? Or is there just something sweet about 200 year old wood that intoxicates your sense of smell.

Imagine the history that belongs to the wood in this “shed.” It comes from seeds that were planted when the idea for the Revolutionary War was just fermenting. And it’s still here, every single day telling the story of this distillery. This warehouse has seen it all. It survived the harsh winter of 1913. There was the Tornado in 1956 and who can forget the flood of 1973? But, it’s still here. Still working, living and breathing whiskey as great grandpa designed it to do.

Sure, there are more cobwebs and spiders than there used to be. It’s an old building after all. One of the family members proclaimed it to be a grand old warehouse of monumental importance, so now it’s on the National Registry of Historic Buildings. Yet, the premise has always been the same. We need a place to age those spirits. And #5 has always been there.

Ask the family members to describe #5 and they all tell you the same thing.”The angels get more than their fair share from #5 but we don’t care. To us, there is nothing finer than the whiskey that comes from old #5. We wish they drank less. But then again, we really don’t need an excuse to drink more?”

#1 Non-Retired Barleywine on RB and 5th overall after listings like Dave, King Henry and "M". I’m excited to try this. Bottle says "2012 Bourbon", enjoyed in a 375ML at 55 F

Pours a sewer water almost nasty old tea pour, and a minor head formed but quickly faded

The nose is incredible. Smells like lovely caramel with heavy vanilla, muscats and cane syrup.

Explosive taste. Incredibly sweet...very very very sweet. I honestly would say i’m eating cookies and cream ice cream with the amount of vanilla, sugar and creaminess that I get on the taste. VAnilla beans are huge, big velvety caramel and toffee taste but the finish is 100% booze-bomb like I poured an ounce of bourbon into a regular 12oz barleywine.

Overall, heavy, boozy but very thin sweet finish. Not a lot of carbonation but still incredibly drinkable and really a nice treat to try. Not my favorite barleywine but it is pretty good.

Flaske hos Ole Anders juni-13: helt flat, men hva gjør vel det når det smaker det smaker himmelsk. Det virker som bourbonfat er særdeles velegnet for fatlagring av mørke øl. Indeed an ale for angels and sinners alike. Especially sinners, I hope.

2012 version . Purchased at geers , than ’ aged ’ myself a few months . Been waitimg to open this one for a long time Pour is pretty disapointing . Clear , not even that dark brown . in the glass its dark brown , not nearly comparable to black .. Imperial stout ???? Foam is almost non- existent , a very tini white ring .. Bourbon smell , but no overkill Soft carbo . Sweet , buttery , bourbon , yet again , not TOO much . Its enjoyable , but as most of the bourbon ba, i almost taste nothing else than bourbon ... I miss beertaste and complexity .. Edit ; its a barley wine . Makes a lot more sence ! Dont know why i thought this was on ratebeer as an impy ...

Bottle, 2012. Pours cloudy dark brown, small tan head dissipates quickly, some lacing. Aroma is bourbon, toffee, caramel, dried fruits. Flavor is the same, medium sweet, light bitter, quite hot. Full bodied, creamy mouthfeel. Hot bourbon finish. No tartness (yay), but almost un carbonated. Why is that so hard?

375ml bottle [’Bourbon 2012’ stamp on neck]. Hazy dark brown colour with small, frothy, diminishing, beige head, leaving a thin layer. Aroma has explicit bourbon notes, vanilla, leather, oak etc. Taste is moderately sweet, lots of caramel, toffee, vanilla. Very well balanced, smooth, silk, soft. Sadly the bourbon flavours predominate the underlying genuine beer aroma, whereas they perfectly fit in taste. Outstanding beer.

29/01/2013 Brasserie 4:20 (12.7oz, 2008 vintage bottle). Corpo pieno, carbonazione quasi assente. Peccato averla provata in condizioni pessime.

From a 12.7 oz bottle shared at home. Bottled in 2012. Pours a murky dark brown with a thin off white head. B bourbon and prunes in the nose. Raisins, plums and vanilla notes. Wow!

Bottle. Opaque deep brown liquid with minimal off - white head. Aroma coconut, wood, dark fruit, toffee, vanilla, buttery bourbon and soy. Taste is medium sweet and light to medium bitter with notes of toffee, raw sugar, raisins, vanilla and wood. Medium bodied with low or no carbonation. Very nice stuff, complex.
