Historically the term used to describe a porter blended from a variety of ales, entire butt uses 14 different malts and 3 hops to recreate this forgotten style of porter. The beer is black/brown with a crisp white head and is distinctly vinuous. It has little hop character as essentially the flavour is derived from the malts. Malts used: pale Maris Otter, lager, wheat, pale crystal, dark crystal, dark chocolate, pale chocolate, black, roasted barley, caramalt, torrified wheat, amber malt, brown malt and malted oats.

Huge peat roast malt aroma with smoke and coffee. Finishes with coffee bean bitterness. Pours dark brown with OK head and lacing. First beer on tap at Church key. Won’t be the last.

Pours dark brown with ruby highlights. Hard to tell if it’s cloudy, but the beer looks pretty clear in the light. Nice, glowy color. Medium tan head. Lots of fine bubbles. After a few minutes, there’s still a decent film of bubbles. I’m getting chocolate maltiness as the primary flavor in the aroma, but it’s backed up by a mix of fruit, nutty brown malt, caramel, molasses, light coffee/roast and a hint of wood. There’s a lot of malt complexity to this beer. Very nice toasty malt notes. A rather rich aroma for

Lovely roasted malts aroma and feels great in the palate, but does lack something in flavour.

Brown 50cl bottle conditioned beer, best before 27th June 2009, drank on a cold and windy evening in November 2008 while sat eating strong English Cheddar, Branston Pickle and Spring Onions. The review was completed before I started the eating bit. Poured into a handled pint glass. Jet black with only a hint of a deep ruby red colouring when the actual light bulb was against the glass. The tan head swiftly fell away to a thin wispy covering, which was thicker around the collar. The smell was of toasted malts, 14 different ones are used in the brew according to my bottle along with 3 hops. I couldn’t detect any hop aroma, the malts seeing to that. The malts are listed on the label, so you can pretent to find each flavour if you wanted too. The taste was rich and roasted malts, some burnt others others toasted like the smell. No way could I tell you which one stood out the most although dark chocolate does come into the aftertaste more than anything else. There is more than hint of coffee as well. A very good English Porter and most likey the second best I’ve ever had. Bateman’s Salem Porter is still my personal number one.

Bottled 500ml. -from Presporska Pivoteka ie Cafe Luxor, Bratislava, rated in my hotel room in Bratislava. Almost black coloured, small off-white head, roasted coffee in the nose. Light roasted malt, caramel and discreet coffee with hints of chocolate and smoke. Average porter.

Bottle from Prešporská Pivotéka. Dark reddish brown colour, quickly diminishing beige head. Taste is medium bitter with very light sweetness. The bitterness endures in a dry finish. Aroma is coffee, dark chocolate, hints of caramel. Also roasted, with hints of wood. Quite chewy and complex one, pretty drinkable. Good beer.

Bottle from Beers of Europe
Very dark brown, ruby light through glass, thin creamy tan head, reasonable lacing
Aroma - fairly light nose of dark malts, roasted malts, liqourice, hint of plain chocolate
Taste - Rich malts (there are 12 of them!), roasted malts all smoothly blended, liquorice, molasses, some bitter chocolate, light coffee. Roasted malts are light, probably as it’s a porter. Not complex. Flavour perhaps a little understated - but does build up as you drink more
Palate - medium carb, thin to medium body, rather over-carbonated (needs a good stir), underlying smooth and silky texture. Finish is smooth with light coffee and chocolate.
Overall - Quite a nice porter, but over-carbonated, needs a bit more body and flavour. Considering the large number of different malts used (12 or 14), the flavour was not as complex as expected.
