Disappointing stout which is understated from its tasting notes description.

Cask-conditioned at the Knights Templar (JDW), Bristol 16/04/2011. Near black with a thin, tan head. Aroma of big roasted malts with a touch of chocolate. Full mouth feel, with the flavour dominated by charcoal, with a touch of some chocolate and liquorice before a dryish finish. Very enjoyable.

Cask at Baker Street Wetherspoons, London. Black coloured pour with a medium beige head. Roasty, liquorice aroma. Tastes roasty, malty, slight liquorice but not much, slight coffee. Smooth and easy to drink, a nice stout.

Crosse Keys Spoons. Opaque black beer, no real head. Medium dry palate. Nice fresh tasting dark malt, no roastiness or bitterness. Trace of smoke and minerals. Sweet liquorice and a trace of coffee. Crisp dry finish. Good stuff!

Cask handpull at Spoons Victoria Station. Black with thin beige head. Some liquorice but not overly dominant. Some very roasted malt flavour. Burnt and touch of charcoal. Fairly full in mouth and very distinct flavours. Pretty good to be honest. Yes very full in mouth.

Cask at the Crosse Keys, JDW. Pours dark brown with a filmy, beige head. Nice aroma, dark malts, cocoa and coffee beans, hints of roast. Flavor ain’t bad either, very nice smokiness, good malty, sugary backbone, some smoked meats, wood, faint, earthy bitterness. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. Smokey, burnt malt finish, some hints of what I guess is supposed to be licorice, cocoa, chocolate syrup, some citrusy hops in the throat. A very solid beer.
