Born in the luminous moors in an environment of untamed lochs and haunted Scottish castles, the ale Gordon Scotch Ale is so generous that it is willingly shared. Its white, unctuous foam, in total contrast with the dark brown elixir, is a pleasure for the palate. The connoisseur fraternity will recognise the authentic Scotch : the soul of the Scottish Highlands.

Ruby red-brown colour, medium off-white head. Aroma and flavours have caramel. Better than expected after my other Gordon disasters.

330ml bottle from a supermarket in Gent. Mahogany coloured with a big off-white head that left plenty of lacing. Aroma of caramel malt, dark fruit and a hint of liquorice. The flavour had more caramel and fruit, with some spice and a long bitter finish. Very enjoyable.

(Bottle, Monk’s CafΓ©, Stockholm, 31 Oct 2007) Dark brown colour with brief, beige head. Fruity, malty nose with notes of dried fruit (prunes, raisins), brown sugar, dark rye bread and ryvita. Malty taste with dried fruit (figs, prunes), roasted malt, a hint of smoke and a slightly metallic, vienna style bitterness in the finish. Sweetish, but still balanced. Nice beer, better than expected.

Malt aroma. Flavor is simple with sweet malt, light sugar, and meat. A simple beer overall but right on for the style, and a good thick palate as well. I am surprised to see the abv is so high as it was well hidden.

33 cl bottle, courtesy of Cardinal pub, Stavanger. ABV is 8.6%. Copper colour, large beige head. Pleasant aroma of malts, caramel and hops. The flavour is very sweet as expected, malts, sugar and caramel galore, but the sweetness is to some degree balanced by decent hops, which linger in the aftertaste. Still, the beer is sweeter than I’d like it to be. But at 8.6% ABV, this is not an easy-drinking refreshment beer anyway. Worth a try, when you know what to expect.

a deep brown colour, with a rich malt nose, sweet malt with a hint of toffee, and a little spirit like evaporation.

Re-rate 7/12/12: Draught sample at Porter & Sons. Clear deep red-amber color with a beige head. Aroma of caramelly malt, some dark fruits notes, toasty and nutty hints and a bit of alcohol. Sweet malty flavor with caramel, some fruits, alcohol and honey notes. Finishes drier with some alcohol spiciness and light earthy hops notes. Medium to full-bodied. Too sweet and alcoholic for my liking, a bit hard to drink, but still not bad. 6/3/6/3/13=3

Bottle. Color is dark brown with a big long-lasting beige head. Aroma is sweet caramel malt, some roastiness and a bit of alcohol. Flavor is very sweet malt, and has a long bitter, spicy and alcoholic finish. Full bodied with a great smooth mouthfeel. 7/4/8/5/16=4

Dark brown in color with light brown head. Sweet caramel smell with a hint of grassy hops. Sour coffee like flavor leaves way to a pleasant caramel malt finish.
