A cask version of the classic Oktoberfest-Märzen. Brewed with specially imported German malts, including Carahell and Cara-Munich for depth of colour and flavour. Noble hop varieties are added at three stage stages during the boil.

Cask@Akkurat, Stockholm (backlog, thanks K.B.!). Deep golden colour, small white head. Aroma is grass, some sweet and bready malts along with my caramel and toffee. Flavour is rather similar with some slight bitterness coming in the end.

The third real ale at the beginning of a session in the Cask Pub and Kitchen, London; Oct 2011: The hand pulled pint looked interesting, bronze in colour, so a bit darker than a traditional Oktoberfest/Marzen usually looks: the head being full and lasting. I believe both Carahell and Cara-Munich malts amongst others; are used in the brew. The smell was a mix of hop pines and malty molasses, grains also. The taste was a good healthy blend of maltiness and fruity hops, difficult to compare it to the taste of a true Oktoberfest bier, but as a UK brewed cask version I certainly enjoyed it. Didn’t have that lager/pilsner/helles base to start from, this is an ale based brew and it shows in all aspects. It did however lead to a change of tack during my drinking session, I moved onto German bottled beers leaving the cask selection alone.

Cask at Akkurat, Stockholm. Bronze colour. Spicy hop aroma. Dry and fruity with medium body. Crisp and grainy. Spicy hpos leads to aresiny bitter finish. I’d be very surprised if this indeed was a lager, to me it seems like a reasonably good amber ale.

Cask på Pub & Kitchen, Pimlico 6 Okt 10. Gyldenbrun. Lavt luftig skum. Svakt fruktig aroma. Smaken brukbart fyldig. Litt frukt og med en tung fruktig bitter ettersmak.

On tap at the White Horse, Parsons Green. Clear amber beer, residual white head. Fairly dry palate. Bittering hops - orange and grapefruit. Loads of bitterness. Dry finish. Lingering bitter aftertaste. Not for me - another Dark Star dissapointment this evening! :(

Cask at Kitty’s, Helsinki. Poured dark orange color with a typical soapylooking white head. Aroma was grapefruits and malt. Very bitter flavor with some fruity notes. Not a märzen at all. Nonetheless, very drinkable, well hopped beer.

(Cask at Kitty’s, Helsinki) For a start, this is no märzen or anything I would categorise as Oktoberfestbier either. This was quite hoppy bitter. Hops almost drowned all the other aromas and flavours but some bits of malts and sweetness managed to get through. Not a bad brew but I would have liked more balanced and maltier one better.

Cask at CPK. Pours a clear, orange-amber with a bubbly, foam head. Grapefruit and other citrus hops are present in the nose. Flavor is lightly sweet with some bready malts, then lots of dirty bitterness. Light in body with soft carbonation. Has an earthy and dirty finish, which lasts, along with mild caramel notes. Good beer and much hoppier/less sweeter than any fest beers I’ve had before.

(Cask at The Rake, Southwark, London, 28 Nov 2009) Golden colour with frothy, off-white head. Fruity, malty nose with grapefruit, resin and fresh hops. Fruity, malty taste with hoppy notes of grapefruit, orange and pine needles over a solid malt foundation with grainy malt. More than medium body, balanced sweetness, generous hoppy bitterness. An Oktoberfestbeer with loads of citrussy, resiny hops - I guess this can only come from Dark Star. Excellent.
