Cask at Wetherspoons, Victoria 16 Nov 08. Looks like strong coffee. Strong aroma of coffee. No head. Just like plain cold coffee. Not my cup of tea.

Cask Conditioned at J.D. Wetherspoon - The Knight’s Templar, London
Very dark brown color. The aroma is indeed nothing else than coffee, not strong, like an American one, and not burnt. The body is light, with a mild coffee flavor, see above, and a very light sour touch; the plus side is that at times it reminds some good dark chocolate. Pleasant.

Cask handpull at Crosse Keys, London. Ruby, deep colour with disappearing head. Yes its coffee choccy. Coffee is a bit odd though, not sure it entirely works, but good to see this in cask

From cask at Crystal Palace. Pours dark brown with a minor amber glare and a dense tan head. Roasted and chocolate malty aroma. Spiced hoppy and slight powderish chocolate flavoured with a distinct bitterness and acidic note coming through from the hard roasted malt. Spiced and bitter finish.

Cask at The Penny Black, JDW Bicester, Oxon . Pours reddy brown with light beige head. Freshly roasted but slightly spent coffee beans in evidence straight away, full flavour in mouth. The aroma is big coffee but also some ashtray (not in a nasty way) and even a little fruitiness at the end. There is some bitter chocolate but its the coffee beans at times that keep coming back. The taste is not too dissimilar to that of a slightly watered down version of one of those chocolate covered coffee beans.

Cask-conditioned at the Commercial rooms JDW, Bristol 1/11/08. Near black with reddish hints and a moderate, tan head. Light coffee aroma with some sweet malts. Flavour was dominated by the coffee, with a pleasing dry roastiness and some sweet fruit, leading to a decent bitter finish. Good stuff.

[cask handpull at Monk’s Retreat, Reading] Deep ruby-brown. Sour smokiness initially, then a sweet coffee chocolate comes through - like a Quality Street Coffee Cream that’s been toasted over a bonfire made of plums. So far, so yum. But then the flavours collapse into an uneasy bitter/sweet/sour mix that disappoints, along with a very sticky mouthfeel. It returns to form in the dry smokey aftertaste, but ultimately I was a little disappointed - it’s not a patch on Dark Star Espresso. c9

Cask at the Monks Retreat (JDW), Reading. Cherry red with a thin off-white head; aroma of milky coffee with a touch of red fruit; very sweet to start, with subdued coffee flavours; then bursting with lots of purple fruits; smooth and creamy and easy to drink; the finish is slightly dry, but still fruity. Very good.
