They say there’s no such thing as a free meal – but as you wind your way through wooded hills towards the tiny village of Cranborne, you might chance upon a charming rogue who says differently.

For years, the Cranborne Poacher has roamed these parts, outwitting both authority and prey in pursuit of pilfered plums and a pheasant for his pot.

Crystal and chocolate malts provide a full-bodied taste with sweet, complex flavours of damson and liquorice.

Bottle as 'Badger Poachers Choice'. Pours clear ruby brown with a cream head. Aroma: malty, fruity, plums. Taste: moderate sweet, forest fruits with damson flavours dominant, floral, hint of liquorice & chocolate. Medium bodied, moderate carb, sweet fruity finish. Seems to be a marmite beer, different for sure although I've no strong opinons either way

500ml bottle @ monthly tasting, Chez Sophie, June 18, courtesy of Jeremy. Pours amber, creamy off-white head. Aroma has palma violets, damsons. Taste is gentle, fruity with a nice damson presence, floral with some mild liquorice coming through on the finish. A little more liquorice coming through in the aroma. An interesting flavoursome blend.

Bottle at home from Tesco. Deep dark colour in the tankard and a nice head. A strong aroma of malt, dark fruit and a hint of liquorice. The taste was all about the liquorice and I had cooled it perfectly so it had calmed down and was layered into the flavour. The mouthfeel was lovely and smooth and there was a definite tang from the alcohol. A nice beer, but very rich and you couldn't have more than one.

Bottle. Dark amber colour. Clear. Huge frothy off-white well-lacing head. Sweet fruity smell. Massive berry jam. Minor starch. Medium body. Sweet estery taste. Lots of berries again. Burnt sugar. Pleasant still too sweet I guess. Light hoppy bitterness in ending in not enough for balance. OK
