Pumpkin Imperial Stout with habanero chili.

Russian Imperial Stout with pumpkin and habaneros. Made by Shelton Brothers’ very own Robert Merryman and some friends before he left Spain. If you like big stouts this is pretty killer. You don’t really notice the pumpkin but you would if it wasn’t in there. Dark chocolate and smoke notes in the nose, some roasted malt. The hot pepper creeps up on you but it’s not over the top.

From tap at ’Café Gollem’ (Amstelstraat). Pitch black with a medium large, frothy, tan head. Surprisingly faint, sweetish and a little roasty aroma of chocolate, coffee, toasted nuts and some red fruits. Sweetish, roasty taste of dark chocolate, coffee, licorice and some spices (pumpkin?), followed by a very long, peppery, very hot and moderately roasty-bitter finish. Medium to full body, creamy mouthfeel, soft carbonation. I really like it, but the peppers are quite overpowering.

Bottle @ Hotel NH Eixample, Barcelona. Pours black with a brown head. Aroma of roasted malt, caramel, light coffee, licorice, veggies, chilli. Flavor is malty, caramel, lots of licorice, little chocolate, some fruity notes, chillies. Medium body, average carbonation, light sweet finish with a lasting chilli bite, some alcohol warmth aswell. Feels a little fizzy for a 11.8% ABV beer, wonders if this is how its surposed to be 280316

Bottle @ home. Black colour with not much head. Smells mostly roasty and sweet. Tastes roasty, sweet, some chocolate, liquorice, slightly peppery and some alcohol. The peppers don’t give any heat though so that’s fine. Medium to full body, soft carbo.

330 ml. bottle @ home. Purchased @ Malt Attacks. BBF 04/2016. Awesome label. Black, extremely dark brown & basically no head. Nose is roasted, big umami, soy sauce with a somewhat odd vegetable sweetness, faint vegetable pumpkin sweetness, more soy sauce, light vegetable habanero,.. Taste rather big on roast, burned malts, touch charcoal, ashes, thick soy sauce, touch burned coffee, umami, huge roast, some chocolate syrup in the back, light sweetness becomes more overt after a while, touch brown sugar sweetness, light chocolate, possibly some faint sweetish pumpkin, some odd vegetable sweetness but nice green jalapeno burn in the back,… Hoped for more sweet spices sweetness here like I am used from USA pumpkin beers. This is so big on roast & umami, jalapeno is good here. Not as awesome as a had hoped, far too big on umami & burned / charcoal notes for me. Jalapeno is apparently a good chili to use in beer for spiciness.

Opaque dark brown beer, good tan head. Palate is airy and semi dry. Smooth dark malts with a spicy licorice streak. Nice fruity tang. Touch of dark chocolate and a trace of coffee. Spicy dry finish. Tasty, even a little intense.
