Bottle from Gretna Green Food Hall. Copper-brown with a beige head. Boozy raisins followed by a cheap woodiness (think creosoted garden fence rather than vintage oak barrels). Finishes with dirt - not pleasant earthy hops, just plain filth - and an unpleasant slightly sour bitterness. Gets worse with each sip, and I kept having to reduce my score. Not the sophisticated beer the label claims - instead it's a bit of a filthy alcoholic mess, with the aroma being the only redeeming feature.

Bottle. Nose is cola, fruity, dark fruit, toffee, apples, fig rolls. Taste is malt, slight pepper, medicinal bitterness, woody, vodka. Hands down the worst Barley Wine I've ever drunk, it tastes like a home brew attempt.

330ml bottle from Gretna Green. Hazy brown with a minimal cream head. Looks a bit like pond water too be honest. Aroma is raisins, Christmas cake and a little vanilla. Taste is burnt for and a little of that dried fruit. Disappointing

330ml bottle from Gordon and McPhail. Nose is light toffee and a hint of raisins. Clear rusty red with a medium beige head. Flavor is lightly sweet, lightly bitter, with a hint of fruitiness. Mediocre for a barleywine but better than most lagers, hence the rating.

330ml bottle from some whiskey shop in Edinburgh - Solid deep red black body with an off white lasting head. Nose is a treacle molasses backdrop to lots of dark cake fruits. Taste is sweet but with a bonfire toffee bitterness. Better than I thought it was going to be.

Bottle thanks to cgarvieuk dregs run. Appearance - deep golden amber with nae heid. Nose - dry orange and booze. Taste - honey and orange. Palate - medium bodied plus with a tangy texture and a long finish which is more sweet than I’d prefer. Overall - not tangy enough

Bottle from Baxters, Fochabers. It pours clear deep mahogany brown with medium yellow - beige head. The aroma is sweet, sticky toffee pudding, toffee, raw alcohol boost, nail varnish remover and caramelized sugars. The taste is sweet, oily, cardboard, toffee, brown bread, raw alcohol, cereal, toasted grain, raw alcohol and nail polish remover with a short finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. For such a big beer it doesn’t have much flavour or depth. Very, very meh.
