At Bart’s Bourbon County tasting in Bruges. A very special and highly acclaimed version of BCBS, aged on rye whisky barrels and with added fruit as well as sea salt... Very thin, loosely structured, yellowish beige, quickly dissolving head, black robe with mahogany to bronze coloured edges. Aroma carries a lot of hot chocolate sauce and wet oak, along with hints of beef stock, cured meat, blackberries, sweet cherries, liquorish, coffee liqueur, whisky, bayleaf, old sherry, candied dates, brown rum, toasted bread. Sweet and candied onset (the candied cherries, no doubt) well positioned against this mellow and lively berry sourishness, followed by a thick umami accent of cured meat, probably reinforced by the salt, though no outspoken saltiness appears; very oily, thick mouthfeel, softly carbonated, achieved by a thick layer of nutty, toasted and caramelly malt bittersweetness; the blackberry and cherry sourishness continue well over this, adding the woody tannins in the back to dry the tail, while warming, notably whisky-like alcohol rounds things off, along with a peppery hop accent. A kind of chocolate liqueur flavor lingers after swallowing. This a deeply beautiful beer: the high class of BCBS is elegantly adorned with berries, lending it a fresh, crisp sweet-and-sourness which does not clash with the basic character of the beer; neither does the pinch of salt, which remains limited to a vague but structurally interesting background presence. Wonderful, glad I finally tried it.

2015 bottle pour into a snifter showing thick and oily pitch black with no head. The nose shows a mix of toffee and raisins with hints of cinnamon. Aromas tend to be very subtle in general. The palate is full bodied and thick; lightly oily. Barely any carbonation. Moderately sweet with pronounced flavors of toffee and raisin with a light vanilla background and a strong resurgence of toffee, raisin, and a light blackberry sweetness on the aftertaste. Light alcoholic spice. Amazing.

From a bottle at Churchkey. Pours black with a tan head. Light bourbon aroma. Flavors of whisky and berries with some sour cherry coming through. Less boozy than some of the variants, but still packs a punch.

On tap at abv. Pours a pitch black color with a small beige head. A medium smoke and cherry fruity nose. The flavor is big sticky sweet barrel, tobacco, licorice, whiskey. Low heat. Toffee, hazelnut.

Sampled from 0.5 l bottle at RBBSG 2016 in Evergem. Clear, black with a beige head. Sweetish-malty, moderately roasty and a bit fruity aroma of dark chocolate, coffee, licorice, hazelnut and some dark ripe fruits. Sweetish-malty, moderately roasty and a bit fruity taste of dark chocolate, coffee, licorice, hazelnut and some dark ripe fruits, followed by a long, moderately bitter, quite warming-alcoholic finish. Medium to full body, slightly oily mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Very nice!

Clear dark brown beer, practically no head. Aroma: sweet, bourbon, vanilla, forest fruits. MF: soft carbon, medium to full body. Taste: alcohol, sweet, sugary, bit roasted, little smoky, sourish touch. Aftertaste: sweet, alcohol, sugary, fruity, more forest fruits, caramel, vanilla, bourbon.

500 ml bottle courtesy of skullgeorge. Thanks George! Black color with brown head. Malty aroma, roasted, chocolate, cocoa, vanilla, wood, alcohol, dark red fruits. Sweet and bitter taste and light salty aftertaste. Full silky oily to creamy body with soft carbonation.
