Originally called "liquid bread," the Dopplebock style guided monks through periods of penitent fasting. Wolfgang has heavenly notes of caramel, dark fruit, and toffee balanced by a subtle hop character. While its revered history evokes and appreciation of austerity and sacrifice, this Dopplebock is a rich luxury - no repentance required.

Bottle. Red chestnut, offwhite lace. Roasted, berries, caramel, citric leafy hops. Medium body, fruity sweetness, mellow creaminess. Feels a bit sweet and green, gets cloying after a little while. doesn’t quite tick all the boxes for a clean doppelbock

Bomber from Malt & Vine. Pours dark and ruddy with a slight creamy beige head. Aroma is pretty roasted malt with treacle and some darkish fruit. Med body. Flavor is roast malt with chocolate and nut notes, with something like dates and molasses. It’s not dry, but it’s not sugary, and it’s very tasty.

Sample at Ale Wine & Spirits in Powell on 08/09/2012. The beer is a clear burgundy color with a medium thin light beige head that recedes steadily. Partial rings of lacing. Aroma of toasted malt, grain and hops. Medium-bodied with flavors of bready malt, grain, fruit and mild hops. The finish is sweer and malty up front and leaves a grassy hops aftertaste. Above average overall.
