DPA has risen to become one of the most award-winning English-style pale ales in the world. Sporting a brilliant copper hue and an assertive floral hop aroma, DPA is known for its smooth, malty middle, which is expertly complemented with hearty and complex hop flavor. DPA’s extraordinary hop finish is marked by crisp yet moderate hop bitterness.

Excellent, simple pale ale. Bright golden liquid topped by a decent head. The aroma is balanced between light malt and floral hops. Nothing overwhelms. The flavor is clean and crisp even at a fairly warm temperature. DPA is the picture of balance, as a pale ale should be. The hops and malt flavors work very well together. The beer would garner an even higher score if the end product was a bit more interesting. As is, it’s still very good, just not earth-shattering but perhaps that was the goal.

Bottle from Melger’s Wijn-en Drankenhandel, Haarlem. Drunk on the ferry to North Shields. Pallid amber colour with a minimal white head. Sweetish lightly fruity aroma with vague hop. Crisp enough mouthfeel, but really doesn’t kick on from there. Thin and watery slightly insipid hop flavour. Finish just not happening; some slight bitterness, but overall a bit of a soggy, damp squib. Expected much more from this normally excellent brewery.

Bottle at The Rake. Wet paper nose, thanks Ken for spotting that. Lot better in mouth. Good pale ale, good freshness in mouth. Not sure about the aroma but the finish is hoppy enough. Easily do 5 pints of this in an evernt. Little bit sweet. 3.3 mostly for the palate which is excellent.

355ml Bottle from De Bierkoning. Clear copper colour, white head. Aroma of light hops and yeast, flowers, some lemon. Flavour is light sweet, some caramel, toasted malts, some candy, flowery hoppy bitter finish, just a bit more bitter than what is typical English. Medium bodied. Very nice session ale.
