The Reverend, was created in tribute to the life of Sales Mgr. Tom Boogaard's grandfather, an ordained Episcopal Reverend. Tom was inspired by the life of his grandfather and wanted to create a tribute beer that contained his sterling traits. True to both our "small brewery, BIG BEERS" philosophy and to the spirit and character of the departed Reverend, this beer is strong willed, assertive, and pure of heart, a heart of candy sugar. It contains as many authentic imported Belgian specialty malts as the brewers could cram into our mash tun, and lots of Belgian dark candy sugar stirred into the brew kettle. A divinely complex and beautifully layered beer with hints of dark cherries, currants, and molasses, complimented by an underlying spiciness. Sinfully smooth considering the high alcohol content. Cellarable for 4 years.

On tap at Avery. Wow. Hopped out Quad, pretty remarkably well done. Smooth and doughy, the filtering really makes this one much more drinkable. Big alcohol laced maltiness. Bigtime beer, without the bigtime syrup. Awesome.

22 oz bottle purchased at Lukas in Kansas City, Missouri. Pour is a hazed golden brown with a tan head that falls quickly. The aroma is sweet pineapple brown sugar malt, along with floral spice yeast. Not much evident alcohol in the nose, which is a tad surprising. The taste is sweet up front, more brown sugar candy than pineapple, but the fruit is present. The yeast jumps in mid-taste, and sort of jumps on top of the sweet, rather than mixing in or integrating. There is a grassy earthy thing going on in the finish, and only the very end of the lingering finish shows alcohol. The flavors are decent, just a bit to sharp for my tastes. The palate is on the heavier side of medium bodied, with an oily syrupy mouth feel. This is a pretty typical American style Quad, in my book. I think someone looking for an aggressive, sweet beer would like this. That’s not my bag, though.

Bottle @ Hotelroom, Denver. Pours clear golden orange, loads of spakling bubbles heading for the surface, small creamy offwhite head. Nose is lots of fruit, bananas up front, caramel, brown sugar, yeast, some spices. Taste is brown sugar, caramel, lightly roasted malts, white pepper and other spices, sweet fruit, bananas, peach,hint of alchohol. Medium to full body, silky creamy mouthfeel, long lasting but soft carbonation. Overall on the sweet side, but good. 301110

Bottle, 22oz. It pours a hazy, orange-golden body under a small off-white head. Resiny, sweetish nose with alcohol and some mint. Quite pleasant, but not much like a quad. The flavor on the other hand, is more spot on, with some dried fruits, alcohol, sweet fruityness, sufficient bitterness and a faint spicy touch. Full body, quite warming. Lasting finish with fresh and dried fruits, sweetness and enough bitterness to give it some balance. Overall, this one’s a bit too much in a way, but it’s definately a beer I could drink more of. 091230

650ml bottle. Hazy, dark golden body with an off-white head. Aroma is relatively mild malt and caramel. Flavor is sweet, caramel, dry fruit, light burnt sugar and Madeira. Harmonic and pleasant, maybe a bit to much on the sweeter side.
