The Reverend, was created in tribute to the life of Sales Mgr. Tom Boogaard's grandfather, an ordained Episcopal Reverend. Tom was inspired by the life of his grandfather and wanted to create a tribute beer that contained his sterling traits. True to both our "small brewery, BIG BEERS" philosophy and to the spirit and character of the departed Reverend, this beer is strong willed, assertive, and pure of heart, a heart of candy sugar. It contains as many authentic imported Belgian specialty malts as the brewers could cram into our mash tun, and lots of Belgian dark candy sugar stirred into the brew kettle. A divinely complex and beautifully layered beer with hints of dark cherries, currants, and molasses, complimented by an underlying spiciness. Sinfully smooth considering the high alcohol content. Cellarable for 4 years.

Haven’t had a quad in a long time. pours burnt orange with lovely nose of candies. tastes of caramel, burnt sugar, molasses, dark fruits, brandy and leather. its chewy and lingering finish. alcohol warming on finish

From a 22 oz bottle shared at home. Pours a cloudy dark copper with an off white head and plenty of lacing. Aroma of bread dough, Date and candy sugar notes.
Update 10/9/13 - aged 2002 vintage on tap at the Avery Tap Room. Aroma is more fruity and alcohol mellowed with age.

Very slightly hazy amber beer. Not much of a head. Light dry palate. Sweet yeasty malt, a little more tripel than quad. Finishes dry with more sweet yeast. Faint orange and even fainter tropical fruits coming through.

22 ounce bottle into chalice, no bottle dating. Pours crystal clear reddish copper color with a 1 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lasts. Some good spotty lacing on the glass. Aromas of caramel, molasses, raisin, toffee, biscuit, toasted grain, grape, candi sugar, and light yeast spices. Some very nice and well balanced aroms; with good complexity and strength. Taste of big caramel, biscuit, molasses, toffee, raisin, fig, toasted grain, light clove, and slight yeast spices. Lingering notes of caramel, toffee, raisin, fig, biscuit, molasses, and light yeast spices on the finish for a while. Fantastic flavor balance and complexity; with no cloying sweetness at all. Extremely easy to sip on; with hardly any alcohol warming noticed other than a minimal warming after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a creamy and fairly slick mouthfeel. Overall, this is a fantastic Belgian quad style. Great flavor balance and complexity; and extremely smooth to sip on. Loved this one.

Sweet aroma with american hops, malt, candi sugar and some raisins. Flavour is very sweet with lots of sugar, syrup, some caramel, toffee and hints of raisins. Way too sweet and not very quadrupel-like.

Finish is strong and warming. Alcohol burns through slightly. Slightly too sweet, tastes more like an American Strong Ale than a Quadrupel.

Bomber. Thanks to my brother for this. Pours a hazy dark orange with virtually no head; has a thin beige collar. Aroma consists of vegetable matter, earth, nuts, pineapple. Taste is sweet and meaty with a faint tart finish. Has a distinctive American piney hop taste in the finish (actually didn’t notice it until halfway through my second glass). There’s something about this that reminds me a lot of Avery’s 18th Anniversary brew. Definitely some of the same ingredients and/or techniques involved in the brewing of this. Carbonation is medium. Very good, but it hardly tastes like any Belgian quad that I’ve ever had.
