In craft beer, there are almost as many bad rye puns as there are bad hop puns; Smuttynose is happy to spare you from more of either. Instead, we’ll tell you about our new Big Beer, Rhye IPA. We brewed it because we like drinking hoppy American-style beers and we wanted a chance to brew with rye. The rest, as they say, is history. The result is a 7% hoppy IPA, with rye spiciness and big hop character. This beer will really get under your armor…
The image on the Rhye IPA label is a famous drawing of an Indian rhinoceros by 16th century German painter and printmaker, Albrecht Dürer. Dürer had never seen the creature before and created the drawing based on one description and a crudely scribbled sketch.

66cl bouteille @ RBBWG III, thanks ThirstyBird & Jeff.

66 cl. bottle sampled @ RBBWG 2014. Courtesy of & thx! to JefVerstraete. Hazy orange with a white head. Lots of hops in the nose, fruity, orange, grapefruit, touch caramel, citrus, biscuit. Very bitter orange peel upfront, flowers, bitter flowers, orange, biscuit, grapefruit, nicely balanced with a solid malt backbone. Easy to drink, good carb. Very solid beer all over the map.

Location: 22 oz bottle from Sparrow, 11/28/13, Happy Thanksgivukkah!

Aroma: The nose is full of tropical hops and rye malt spice, not a ton else, but the combo works
Appearance: Pours a mostly clear golden orange with a frothy beige head and heavy lace
Flavor: The taste is similar, lots of spice, plenty of tropical/citrus sweetness, and mid-plus bitter
Palate: The body is medium, it has a smooth feel, and a long, dry, spice-filled finish
Overall Impression: I thought this was a very tasty beer. The rye malt spice really comes through and melds nicely with the citrus/tropical fruit hop based IPA flavors. Good stuff.

22 oz. bottle, pours an opaque murky brownish orange with a medium white head. Aroma is very fruity, with loads of rye, oranges, tropical fruits and resinous hops. Flavour brings out dry rye notes, citrus and resinous hops, oranges, and dry bready malts. Very fruity and dry, with a dynamic body. Wonderful stuff.

Bottle shared at Sander’s in NYC. Pours clear, vibrant gold with a creamy white head. The nose has crispy pine, dry grapefruit, melon. Medium sweet flavor with lots of rindy citrus, more melon and grapefruit, dry pale malts. Medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Sweet finish, quite rindy, with some dried pale malts, pine needles, mild earth. Just lots of dry, rindy and lightly pithy citrus in here. Decent.
