Hommelbier from Poperinge was brewed for the first time in 1981, for the triennial hop festival in the village. Hommel is local dialect for hops, and was the inspiration for the name of this tribute to Poperinge’s most famous export product. Since then, Poperinge’s Hommelbier has earned quite a reputation for itself with beer fans around the world, for its unique style, brewed with 100% hops from Poperinge.

Picked up on sale… Poperings Hommel Bier 7.5% Orange gold with a bready orange marmalade tart aroma. Full bodied and dry with some white pepper spice up front and dome stone fruit richness in the finish. A solid Belgian ale but not one that’ll stand out in your mind.

Bottle at In Den Rozenkraus, Leuven. Little aroma. Standard gold with micro sediment. Taste was nice until I tried and then it just gave me booze. Very strange. How can the taste go from Hero to zero upon tasting. Before it was giving me a lovely blonde / saison mix. Now it's giving me paper and booze. How strange. Some nice witty endings. Very very hard one, gonna go in the middle.

0.25 l bottle from 'Hubo's Drankboetiek', bottled in May 2021. Almost clear, golden with a massive, foamy, almost stable, white head. Sweetish, gently fruity-floral, slightly grassy, moderately yeasty aroma of hay, pear, some clove and a touch of honey. Slightly sweet, gently bitter, rather fruity-floral, gently grassy taste of fresh grass, lemon peel, pear, a touch of clove and light grains, followed by a short, moderately bitter, gently grassy, moderately yeasty finish. Medium body, fairly effervescent mouthfeel, lively carbonation. Nicely aromatic, hoppy Belgian Blond, unfortunately too effervescent. Glad to finally have tried it, a must try from the #mj500.
