Hommelbier from Poperinge was brewed for the first time in 1981, for the triennial hop festival in the village. Hommel is local dialect for hops, and was the inspiration for the name of this tribute to Poperinge’s most famous export product. Since then, Poperinge’s Hommelbier has earned quite a reputation for itself with beer fans around the world, for its unique style, brewed with 100% hops from Poperinge.

On tap at restobiere, bruxelles. Golden color, almost clear, big creamy white head, fair persistence. Aroma is malty with hints of honey and lots of hops following. Very tasty, i thought it was a tripel. Taste perfectly balanced, finish nicely bitter, with aromatic herbs and roots. Medium to full body, fresh, alcohol comes out very late and it’s not intrusive. A lovely ale.

Bottle at the Elm Tree from Belgian National Day Festival. Light golden and almost clear. A small foamy white head leaves considerable lacing. Candy sugar yeast, pear drops, notes of coriander in the aroma. Further olfactory probing reveals touches of butterscotch, bubblegum and applesauce. Taste is initially simple and sticky sweet, with yeasty flavours to the fore. The ensuing soft bitterness is welcome, giving more depth to the taste. Concentrated resiny hop bitter finish. Fruit caramel, orchard fruit and sourdough dance in the aftertaste. Thin to medium creamy body. Heavy carbonation, but it feels brilliant on the lips. Surprised as to how much I liked this (a lot)!

Bottle from Nisa, Hebden Bridge. Clouded orange brown with a thin head. Has yeasts and pale malts in its nose, grittier in this respect due to its evident strength. Fairly smooth in the palate.
