Bottle in Hongkong. Smooth roasted beginning. Fresh, smooth with sourish hints on a fresh and smooth but slightly sweetish malt basis. Nicely bittered roasted malty aftertaste. Round and great!

On tap at CBM Jimbocho. Dark cola brown color with a nice head. Great carbonation and rich and creamy mouthfeel. Aromas of toffee, caramel, chocolate and brown sugar are present. 333ml bottle. Quasi black colour with a surviving red glimmer, average to huge, thick, frothy to creamy, fairly lasting, moderately lacing, off-white to beige head. Multifaceted, dense, ’incremental’ aroma on a small, narrow, isolated section of the aromatic scale: roasty dark malty with strawy, smoky, nuttily, grainy overtones, hints of burnt coffee, fish fodder, dark bread, liquorice, burnt caramel. Taste is roasty dark malty, subtle sweetness, hints of coffee, chocolate, treacle, grainy coffee surrogate, diluted soy sauce, 海苔. Strikes every key on the dark malt claviature - pianissimo.

Bottle @ Blue Pig, Manchester. Very dark red with next to no head. Has some roasted malt notes with dark malts giving it a sweetness too.

Bottle from a department store in Umeda. Served in a lager glass. A cola brown beer with ruby accents and a dense head of beige foam – this is a good looking schwarzbier. The aroma is soft mix cocoa, caramel and oats.Med-light bodied with a silky mouthfeel. The taste is a pleasant caramel upfront followed by roasted malts. It’s a really well balanced.

Sampled from the tap at Happy Gnome. Pours a clear brown with anearthyneown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has dark grains and chocolate with a light roast underlying. Flavor has chocolate up front with a growing roast and dark bread.

12 ounce bottle from Holiday Wine Cellar. Pours a deep black color with a medium beige head. A sweet nutty nose. A nice flavor of metal, roast, smoke, overly roasted coffee beans, dusty dry earthy malts. Pretty nice and flavorful. Actually, this is really tasty bordering in on a porter’s general flavor. Nice. 66th Japanese rating.
