Our Bärentöter is a strong crossover between Gose and Bock. This harmoniously complex beer is produced using an opulent mixture of six special malts with additions of coriander, orange peel salt, and a touch of cinnamon. A lactic acid fermentation is complemented by saltiness and malt body to create a perfectly balanced beer. On this basis fine fruit and spice aromas can unfold, making this Gose Bock something very special.

From the tap at FOB, Rimini, Italy. Pours brilliant amber, relatively crisp, with fine white foam. Aroma is confusing: you can feel the salty character, but also a bit of caramel, the latter increasing over time. Body is somehow dense, some stickiness, relatively low carbonation. Taste is sour and salty, with sapidity emerging stronger in the finish. Some sweetness just in the very start.

„Bärentöter“, Flasche (50 cl, MHD: 5/18) von Hopfen & Malz, Berlin. - Kupferrotbraun, klar. - In der Nase nur milde, durch warmes Toastmalz aufgefangene Säure, zarter Lebkuchenduft, Orangenmarmelade und ein Hauch von Zimt. - Antrunk dagegen offensiv sauer, ähnelt Zitronensaft, was so gar nicht zu den Lebkuchenaromen paßt. Keine Restsüße. Durchschnittlich rezent. Im Abgang milde, etwas dumpfe Hopfenherbe bei immer noch dominierender Zitronensäure. - Eine originelle Idee, auch Gose in einer stärkeren Variante anzubieten. Das Ergebnis ist allerdings nicht überzeugend: zu penetrant sauer und zu wenig bockbierähnlich. Möglicherweise gärt der Bärentöter in der Flasche noch nach, wird also immer saurer.

Bottle from Systembolaget. Amber pour with quickly disappearing white beige head. Malty aroma with some salty crackers, light tart citrus and a bit of herbal spices. Taste is tart upfront with red berries, malt and crackers. Spicy finish.

Draught at Haket, on June 30, 2017.Clear brown color, white head. Acidic, sweet, spicy, herbal taste. Berries, light sour aftertaste. Some warming alcohol. Medium full and a bit fizzy mouthfeel, very low bitterness. Sour, very light smoked scent.6/4/6/3/12=3.1

500mL capped bottle. Pours with a clear dim ruby amber color. Pretty shade, not much head though. Aroma is coriander heavy with citrusy herbal. Lacto tartness is strong. So far it’s a lot like the regular. It’s got some more malt sweetness, a little fruity cherry lagering. Some honey and tea aromas. Flavor is like lemony tart tea beer. Lighter carbonation through a ofter medium light body.

Bottle: Hazy, darker amber with a small, off-white head. Caramel, salt aroma. Taste is heavily salted, grain malt, caramel malt. Excellent combination of tangy and briny.... really enjoyed this one.

Somewhere: pours dark amber with very little head. Aroma is some lacto and some fruitiness. Taste is lightly sour, then gets kind of malty. Very light salt. Some sweetness. Is what it is. Cinnamon is not really strong in the taste.

Monthly bottle share at Chez Sophie: 22nd May 2017. Four way split. Cheers Mat for this bottle: BBD Sep 2017. Amber pour, off-white head. Malty, salty and spiced: liked it a lot more than I expected to be honest. I could actually pick up the corriander and cinnamon within the flavours once I got past the salt. Certainly something different and interesting.
