Human history is filled with myths and legends that shape and define our culture. Rituals, celebrations, gatherings.. whatever. One thing that’s for sure, is we enjoy a proper shindig. So let’s get the stories flowing and share a little ’Folklore’. A bracingly deep ale, built dark and rich with an elegantly lean body, accompanied by heady aromas of Belgian yeast, earthy hops and gently kissed by a wisp of smoke.

On tap @ Beer Temple, taster size. Black color, beige head. Aroma’s: red fruit, caramle. Retronasal it’s sweet, sugarwater, red fruit, some herbs. Flavor is moderate to full sweet, lightly roasted, a bit drop/licorice. Medium bodied. Flavor seems to enhance towards the finish, more roast, light bitterness, but overall to sweet and not very stout-like.

Bottle, 14C. Black with a tan head that fades to a coat quickly but never quite disappears. Earthy aroma with dark berries and grapes, roasted barley, some Coke. Taste is much sweeter than expected and while it’s not heavy it is insistently mouthfilling. Roasted and earthy flavours, some chocolate, star anise and pepper, some brine, dark berries/ wine. Lowish carbonation about right where I like. Interesting and good.

From a 355ml bottle on 17/6/2014. Pours black with a smallish head. The aroma is a touch odd, with musty basement and earthy notes most prominent, with a bit of chocolate and caramel in the background. In the mouth, and you get dark chocolate, doughy yeast, some soy, and a moderate but lingering roasty bitterness. The carbonation is a touch above medium and the texture is a little creamy. Described on the bottle as an ’untraditional stout’, it certainly is a little different and quite tasty.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 1/2/2014. Pours pitch black color with a 1 finger fairly dense dark tan head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, roasted malt, dark bread, pepper, raisin, plum, fig, light smoke, light licorice, herbal, and roasted/yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roasted malt and fruity/earthy yeast ester notes; with good strength. Taste of big dark chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, coffee, toast, dark bread, pepper, raisin, prune, fig, light licorice, light smoke, herbal, and roast/yeast earthiness. Light roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, coffee, toast, dark bread, pepper, raisin, prune, light smoke, light licorice, and roasted/yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice complexity and robustness of dark/roasted malt and fruity/earthy yeast ester flavors; with a great malt/yeast balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy, and lightly chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with only a light warming present after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice Belgian stout style. All around good complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roasted malt and fruity/earthy yeast ester flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the ABV. A very enjoyable offering.
