Pineapple and some grapefruit. Pours hazy orange with good head and lacing. Malt forward. Touch of something like bretta. Bottle.

Hazy orange color with a medium bone white head that diminishes gradually to an outer ring. Partial rings of lace. Floral hops, fruit and malt in the nose. Medium body with flavors of piney and floral hops, tropical fruit an biscuit malt. The finish is mildly bitter with a floral hop aftertaste. Decent overall.

Seemed billed as an extra hoppy type IPA, but it ain't. I strained to get much hop nose, there's a hint of resin and wet dog, and tropical fruit. Vague breadiness. Flavor similar, very bready with a peppery hop that hints at dank (but calling this beer a good example of dank hops is near laughable - let's change up that commercial description Highland!). Medium bitter finish, seems to have a good body but finishes on the thin side. Drinkable enough but really disappoints when you're expecting a bright aromatic hopped beer.

Bottle from Trader Joe's. Pours a clear copper gold with a finger of foam that lingers. Light peach and tropical nose. Grassy and twiggy bitterness on the palate. Some resin on the finish. Rich, slightly hazy copper and bronze coloured body with a nice, two centimetre tall off-white head. Aroma of grass, alcohol, metal, a touch of earthy hops and a good deal of nuts and grainy malts. Medium-bodied; Assertive grassy and very earthy malt at first with some metallic notes, a bit of pungent nutty and caramelised sugar flavours coupled with a lot of grain, bitterness and alcohol with some hop elements and the associated bitterness hitting towards the end. Aftertaste shows more malt than hops with the caramel and grain flavours the strongest. Overall, a decent IPA with definitely more of an English-style character with more malt than hops and more metal and earthy notes than anything floral or fruity. Couple that with the more pungent alcohol and grain flavours near the end without any resounding complexities and you get a decent beer at best from one of my long-standing favourite brewers, which is a touch sad. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Grapevine in Fort Mill, South Carolina on 21-August-2017 for US$1,89 after watching the Eclipse, sampled at home in Washington on 05-September-2017.

Bottle from Harris Teeter, Hampstead, North Carolina. Amber with a carbonation and a thin head. Has a full tropical fruitiness with a low to medium citric bitterness.

Draft. Clear golden color. Aroma of pine and grapefruit. Taste is bitter resiny citrus.

Appreciably bitter, yet a bit off-balance, although I’m not quite sure how. Let’s figure this out: starts with an immediate pungent dose of vegetal hop mixed with heavy orange-grapefruit citric bliss, yet the malts feel a tad weak for such a heavily hopped IPA. Gains a dry, yeasty middle, leaning towards pepper and pine, then hits a black pepper and IBU finish. Fades with a resinous bitterness, yet never really separates itself from the IPA horde. Needs...something. I’m not a brewer; I don’t know. Just kinda blah, good but not a standout.

Pour is a hazy orange with a large white head. Aroma is a old school west coast IPA with lots of pine and grapefruit. Flavor is pretty much the same very citrus forward with a bite of bitterness on the back end. No sweet malt was used and that’s a good thing letting the hop bitterness come through. This is as old school as it gets for IPA’S.

3 week old bottle into an IPA. A: Clear tawny light orange with 1" of foam which fell in 3-4 minutes. Busy carbonation and good lacing. S: Very citrusy with orange and grapefruit dominating. T: Bitter and citrusy. Orange zest, pith and pine with a hint of sweetness all coming together nicely. A woody malt note finishes the sip. M: Fairly light bodied, crisply carbonated and refreshing. Slightly resinous finish. O: Maybe my favorite Highland IPA, the standard one is probably a bit tastier but I prefer the lower ABV of this one.
