Our Barley Wine is the most special beer we make, being produced only once every year. It’s a blend of different bourbon barrel-aged vintages that have spent more than a year in wood. We blend the different barrels, and add a bit of freshly brewed Barley Wine to obtain the best possible version.

This year, the Barley Wine was brewed using a double-boil technique in which we evaporate the beer to a high concentration of sugar, add water back to the wort, and then boil it down again to increase Maillard reaction processes and build up some intense caramelization. We went easy on the hops to allow the malt and bourbon characteristics inherited from the barrels to be the champions of this beer.

The aromas and flavours are intense, and should be enjoyed slowly by serving at room temperature to allow even more layered nuances to shine through and add to the
beautiful complexity of this beer. We hope you enjoy this as much as we do.

Shared with my family. Very similar to the anniversary barley wine, maybe a tad more vanilla and bourbon. In the anniversary barley wine there is more bourbon, while the paragon is sweeter and boasts way more vanilla, both in aroma and in flavour. Both are excellent, personally I would probably go for bourbon over sweetness, but the sweet tooths in my family preferred this one.

On tap at Mikkeller Berlin, pours a deep dark mahogany with a tiny bubbly tan head. Aroma is decadent as hell, with lots of bourbon, caramel, toffee and brown sugar. Flavour is rich as hell, with intense molasses, caramelized brown sugar, bourbon, and toffee. So much molasses, finishing on bourbon and burnt sugar. Beauty.

Bottke thanks to Mark! It pours hazy darkest brown with a bubbly yellow - tan head. The aroma is sweet, oily, earthy, vanilla, bourbon biscuit, brownie, earthy, malt loaf and some caramel. The taste is slick, oily, bitter - sweet, dry, malt - loaf, vanilla sugar, toasty coconut, bourbon, toasted cacao, touch of spice, dried fruits and buttered fruit cake with a slick and warming finish. Full body, fine carbonation and oily mouth feel. Rich and unctuous. Flavourful.

Almost clear deep brown beer, tidy tan head. For the hefty 13.5% the palate is pretty airy. It’s also mildly dry and with reasonable fine carbonation. Unsurprisingly rich malts but surprisingly not huge amounts of depth. A touch of soft malt cream. Whisper of savoury malts, vaguely marmite but very mellow. The barrelling seems more whiskey than bourbon. Fruity whiskey with an unusual touch of Coca Cola. Finishes with a little tingling spice. Pretty drinkable but a fairly straight up ba barleywine. Over priced by far but goes down easy.
