A black beer with a beautiful, brown and medium head. Aroma is interesting and complex, dark fruits, lots of fresh anise and mints, some roastiness and hint of liquirice and strawberries. Taste is roasted, some liquirice, anise and mints, but they are not so strong as in the aroma, but anyway, they dominates the taste, some yeast and dark fruits in the aftertaste. Medium+ bodied, a fresh to drink despite of strenght. A very interesting, refreshning mints, enjoyable, but not totally balanced.

Bottle at home - 29/07/12 thanks to an IP trade with Wim. Murky dark brown pour with a good few fingers of off-white head. Hops and Belgian yeast on the nose allied to a little brown sugar, cocoa and spice. Bready malts in the taste allied to the hops and the spice is a little more prevalent. Medium bodied but the carbonation was a little too prickly for me. Drinkable but would revisit many other Struise beers prior to this one!

scored the very last bottle at the struise shop, drinking it at my house. pours as near as black that you can get, withoud calling it pure blackness. in thin layers with light behind it, its still brown. some shifting, but i supose that could be becouse of the aging .. the smell is very familiar, yet i cant realy put it in words... reminds me of sour, metal,... yet i could be ugly wrong with this. can onley say i’m not a big fan of this smell, yet it aint realy hideous . taste is comparable to the smell, yet it tastes less than it smells? not realy a complex brew, yet not borning as well. maybe a chocolat - candy sort of thing is the thing i’m lokking for, taste and smell wise. not realy an aftertaste or twist. pretty straight forward drink . not terrible, but not a big fan as well. i’ll drink it to the end but wont buy another onbe very quickly

330ml bottle from Bieresgourmet
Lot 01.01.2011, BBE 01.01.2016 - Pours deep dark brown, almost black, with a massive foamy head. Aroma of roasted malts, licorice, ripe fruits, chocolate, yeast and earthy notes. Taste is quite untypical with a lot of strong malty spicy notes and fruits combined with salty licorice and hints of roastiness, chocolate, yeast and earthy notes. Finish is roasty with heavy chocolate notes, hints of fruits and some warming alcohol. A bit unbalanced, but interesting.

33 cl bottle @ home. Rated on 29.04.2011
Aroma has licorice, spices and hints of ash. Flavour is rather rich on spices. Also some licorice and ash. Way too spicy, reminds me of the spice overdose on some christmas beers.

330 ml bottle via Beer Planet. Pours black with tan head that dissipates quickly. Aromas of chicory and ginger with a whiff of coffee. Complex. Smooth and warm. Light chocolate, strong coffee, spicy, spruce hops. Distinctive. Ready for another...

Bottle at Kulminator, March 2012. Dark brown with a medium head. This beer reminded a lot of a "Christmas Beer". A lot of spices, particularly coriander. Also yeast, roasted malt, dark fruit and some notes of licorice. More interesting than extremely tasty.

330 ml bottle bought @ Etre Gourmet. Pours very dark reddish brown, almost black, with a huge fizzy and frothy brownish white head that slowly dissipates without leaving much trace at all. Smell is sweet, malty, spicy and quite vinous with dark bread, cardamom, cloves, orange zest, golden syrup, yeasty esters, candy sugar, liquorice root, marzipan and alcohol. Taste is sweet, slightly bitter, tiny metallic and tiny sour with dark bread, cloves, ginger, liquorice root, orange juice, lemon peal, brown sugar, resinous wood, plums, raisins and alcohol. Mouthfeel is tiny dry, tiny sticky sweet and medium to full bodied. Finish is dry, bitter, tiny sweet and tiny sour with bread, cloves and orange peal. Nice and intense. Would probably go very well with some kind of intense cheese.
