Bottled @ home. Dark color, big brown head. Aroma is a combination of licorice candy and laurel, then it becomes more nutty with citrussy hop, and on the third sip I smell belgian yeast combined with roasted malts. Slightly sweet taste, but also malty bitterness, quite spicy, licorice-like. There sure is a lot in this beer.

Bottled. Cloudy near black, small head. Distinct ginger aroma. Sweetish, near full bodied with multi layered flavours of milk chocolate, ginger, sugar, aniseed and pljm brandy. Mildy warming with slight ginger burn. Confusing beer, took me a good while to start enjoying.

Pours mahogany tinged black into a snifter. Mocha head with good retention recedes to hug rim. Sweet and sour anise aromas. Medium bodies with sour pit fruit and dark chocolate syrup upfront turning hot in the lasting dry finish.

Bottle at The Kernel Christmas Tasting 2011. Pours clear, ruby-brown with a light, beige head. Hugely spicy nose, like Christmas spices, with some mint or menthol sting in the nose.Medium sweet flavor, light dry cocoa, tons more spices, dark sugars, bits of leafy bitterness. Medium to full in body with average, massaging carbonation. Mild roasted malts in the finish, some dark sugars, plenty more spiciness. Very interesting beer.

Bottle from Star Grocery in Berkeley, CA. Pours dark brown with a foamy 4 finger creamy tan head. Aroma is strikingly fresh herb/veg. Might be anise. There’s chocolate way down below. Med body. Flavor is rather chocolate/cacao, and there’s something very licorice with that. It’s mildly sweet chocolate, but the herb seems to cut the sweet. Quite different.

Bottle, 10%. Good fruity and spicy aroma, black pepper, sweet chocolate. Very dark brown colour, seems clear. Good stable light brown head. The flavour is a lot like the aroma, not so fruity, but nicely spicy. Rather sweet, but nicely balanced by a good, warming alcohol note. The carbonation is a little high, but that is easy to get rid of. Leaves a good, creamy mouthfeel.

Pours a solid dark brown color with a huge bubbly tan head that displays great retention and moderate lace. Smells of dark brown sugar, caramel, licorice, dark roasted grain, maybe a hint of menthol or pine. Quite a complex flavor on this one. It starts off with some yeasty esters and a mint or herbal flavor that I don’t really care for. Next it throws out some sugars and a hint of chocolate. Finished with some roasted grains, a bit of ash, a touch of alcohol and a lingering hop bite. Medium body and level of carbonation with a slick creamy mouthfeel. Not a bad brew, but not my favorite from DeStruise.

Small bottle shared by Graeme at the Sugar Land Saucer tasting. Pours a dark brown with a large beige head that leaves spotty lacing along the glass. Vanilla oak and floral aroma. Thin mouthfeel with a sweet malt an vanilla chocolate with a light bitter finish. A very good Belgian strong ale from De Struise.

33cl bottle. BBE 02/2016. Poured murky brown with a steady beige/brown head. Aroma is highly spiced, xmas spices as well as some anise. Flavor similar, cinnamon, anise and some roastedness and sweetness. Full bodied. Strange but interesting. Alcohol well hidden, some warmth in throat. Reminded me alot of Anchor - Our special ale.
