Bloody ‘Ell – We have never brewed a straight IPA at Beavertown, why change the habit of a lifetime! Here we take a stripped back IPA malt bill and highly hop it with the tropics of Amarillo and Citra and pile head on with kilos of Blood Orange zest and juice late in the boil, bringing you a smack of citrus and hints of warm orange aromas. One of our favourite and most popular seasonal brews. We will be canning Bloody ‘Ell too from February until the bloody oranges run dry!

From tap at Oedipus International Beer Festival 2016. Aroma is fruity hops, zesty citrus, orange, tropical fruits, touch of grapefruit. Flavour is medium bitter. Body is medium. Crisp and refreshing, plenty of citrus and hops, very fine IPA.

From the (just expired) can. Hazy orange with a foamy white head that soon exits. Aroma is a mix of orange pop, lemon, and caramel. Taste is has an underlying dry, citric bitterness that is strongly leavened by the sweetness of the malts. However the two fight it out rather than blend together. Body stays to the light side of medium. Probably would not get again.

Can from Dranken Geers, Oostakker. Shared with Anke. Pours clear golden/orange with a small, foamy, white head; little lacing. Fresh aroma of grapefruit, blood orange, orange peel, lemon zest, papaya, peach, nectarine, fresh fruity yoghurt. Medium fruity sweet onset, lots of tropical fruit, orange peel, a bit bready; medium to heavy hoppy bitterness building up, hints of blood orange & grapefruit; a very light lemony sour effect in the back. Dry, 'fruity' hoppy finish, more grapefruit than blood orange, a hint of pine. Medium body, oily texture, fizzy carbonation. Doesn't really deliver what it promises, but it's a great spring brew nonetheless.

Amarillo- and Citra-hopped IPA by Beavertown, flavoured with zest and juice from blood oranges; from tap at Dok Brewing Company in Ghent. Regularly shaped, snow white, moussy, slowly thinning but largely stable head over a misty, warm and deep yolk-yellow golden beer. Aroma of grapefruit peel or indeed perhaps blood orange zest, toasted onion and even some raw garlic, dried mango, white bread crust, withering dill, white pepper. Sweetish onset, green banana with a pear-ish note, clean with slightly above average carb for the style, stinging a bit; smooth, lightly oily, clean white bready and bit cereally malt underground, long hoppy finish, bittering but not in an overly harsh way, bit dank and oniony with a lot of grapefruit peel features – but the sweet juiciness I tend to expect from a blood orange IPA, remains very limited. Nice, clean, pretty straightforward but well-brewed IPA, just not quite what I was expecting when I heard about its blood orange component…
