Deep dark brown color, opague. Brown frothy head. Mocha coffee aroma with a hint of chocolate. Rather thin, but with loads of flavor. Blackcurrant, roasted malt, espresso coffee and chocolate. Long toasty bitter and chocolate finish. Lovely beer that needs more body to be really first class.

Szinte nincs habja, színe fekete. Csokis, kakaós, kávés, aszalt gyümölcsös illat. Csokis, kakaóporos, kávés ízek, aszalt szilvás, aszalt cseresznyés aromákkal. Könnyű, közepesen keserű, enyhén szénsavas. Kellemes, jól eltalált porter.

20 December 2018. At Café Frappé, Maastricht. Shared with Anke. Pours hazy black with a lasting, small, frothy, beige head; little lacing. Aroma of fondant, chocolate powder, coffee roast, roasted nuts, earth, cream, cookie, toast. Taste is light malty sweet, some chocolate powder, cream & roasted nuts; medium roasted bitterness on top of that, pure coffee roast, mocha; sourish blackcurrant in the back. Dry, earthy hoppy finish, toasty, lingering fondant, mocha & nuts, all very subtle, perhaps a bit too subtle. Medium body, watery/slick texture, fizzy carbonation. Very straightforward coffee Porter, almost unadventurous despite its craft beer character, yet highly drinkable.

Classic Rogue ale, a porter with mocha as the name says, a concept innovative enough perhaps in Rogue’s early days – being one of those earlier names in the American craft beer movement – but now common enough; bottle from Geers in Oostakker (Ghent). Moussy, pale greyish beige head, lacing in shreds and quickly opening; very dark chocolate brown robe, blackish in general looks, with lightly hazy mahogany edges. Aroma of cappuccino and mocha powder indeed, black burnt toast, bitter chocolate, nutmeg, blood-like iron, toasted walnut shells, black peppercorns, hard caramel candy. Very restrained in sweetness, more sourish in a very dim and soft way, softish carb, slick but somewhat thinnish mouthfeel; toasted nuts and burnt toast with a light metallic edge, ending in soft roasted bitterness with a coffee grounds effect rather than the expressive, fragrant coffee aromatics I was hoping for; nut shell and herbal hop effects linger in the background along with a blood-like metallic ‘zing’. Decent enough for what it is, a simple, basic modern coffee porter, a bit too basic perhaps and a bit ‘outdated’ – but demanding respect for its historical position as one of the first modern coffee porters in the global craft beer world (let’s not forget that this beer has been around since 1994, when there were only around 530-540 craft breweries active in the States – less than ten per cent of the current number).
