The Scotch ale base is light bodied and low ABV, and brings toasted shortcake and blossom honey flavours; the barrel ageing adds a demonic, dark vanilla twist. Rich brown sugar, hints of smoke, spiced fruit, chocolate and raisins are just some of the multitude of flavours that have developed.
Our aim was to showcase barrel ageing in a lower ABV beer and we felt the malty scotch ale base was the perfect way to do this. The body remains light, yet there is a complexity quite unlike anything you would normally expect in a Scotch ale.
Bourbon Baby is a small batch beer and is available in limited quantities in bottle and draft, and will cope with further ageing in the bottle but is best suited to drinking fresh.
We worked closely with Tom and the team from Honest Burger to develop not only a perfect beef patty topped with beer candied bacon and a beer BBQ sauce, but also the ideal brew to sip alongside it.

Bottle. Pours clear dark reddish brown with a small offwhite head. Aromas of bourbon, vanilla, dark fruits, caramel, toffee. Taste is like a Carbed watered down bourbon. Vanilla, booze, dark fruits, toffee, light chocolate.

(Bottle) Dark reddish brown/ruby colour with frothy, off-white head. Malty, fruity nose with dried fruit (dates, raisins), wood, toffee, roasted nuts, orange peel, vanilla and some chocolate. Malty taste with notes of dried fruit, caramel, oak wood, vanilla, roasted nuts, orange peel, cacao, coffee and a mild bitterness in the finish. More than medium body, with a touch of sweetness. Tasty and well balanced, with a slight wood character. Nice one.

Bottle from Eltham Wines, Eltham (October 2016). Dark brown pour with a beige head. Nose of brandy butter, nuts, sultanas, toffee, caramel. Flavours of dried fruit, toffee, caramel. Nice.

330 ml bottle. Clear dark amber body with a small off-white head. Aroma has medium roasted malt, caramel, some smoke, wood, vanilla and Bourbon. Distinct aroma but not too much, very nice. Flavor is sweet, moderate roasted malt, wood, vanilla, Bourbon and balanced bitterness. Fine, smooth body and long lasting fine aftertaste. A very pleasant bourbon stout that’s not overdoing anything. Very nice.

Bottle from Tanakaya. Pours a slightly hazy chestnut brown. Lovely oak-forward nose with molasses and vanilla bean as it warms. Easy drinking and light on the palate. Raisin, cinnamon and light bourbon notes on the finish. Very good.

330ml bottle. Pours dark and cola like. Aroma is smoke, oak and bourbon. Taste has plenty of vanilla, bourbon, raisins and oak. It’s a bit powerful and overbearing considering it’s a "baby".
