On keg at the Guildford Arms. Appearance - opaque dark brown to black. Nice creamy head. Nose - elusive but milk chocolate in there. Taste - more creamy milk chocolate. Palate - close to medium bodied with a creamy texture and a fairly fresh finish. Overall - i think this gets into sweet stout territory. Decent though.

Tap at the Old Ship Inn, Hackney. Poured a dark mahogany with a frothy off white head. The aroma is caramel malt. The flavour is moderate bitter with a light smoky roast malt bitter, light coffee / chocolate palate. Medium bodied with soft carbonation.

Keg at the Swan, Great Horwood, halfway through a 20-mile stroll on the North Bucks Way. Pours black with a thick nitrokeg cream head. Lovely creamy coffee up front, then a mild roastiness followed by some blackberry. Once you eventually get past the head the underlying beer is a little thin and fizzy for my liking, but then that’s keg beer for you. Overall though it’s pretty decent- but I did feel it could have been so much better on cask. Shame.

Cask at The Wheatsheaf, Borough Market, London. A dark brown/black coloured pour with a healthy creamy beige head on top. Sweet, coffee, chocolate aroma. Tastes slightly sweet with chocolate and a hint of coffee, rather milky. I quite enjoyed this offering from the ’new’ Young’s of Bedford. Would certainly drink it again if stranded in a Young’s pub with work colleagues.

Typical representative of the oatmeal stout style revived by Samuel Smith in the seventies. Loose, irregular, yellowish beige head, colour near black with reddish hue, clear. Strong malty aroma, roasted grains, caramel, coffee, toasted bread, dried plums, candied dates, raisins, subtle spicy hops. Mellow, creamy and velvety palate, very soft, fruity with a gentle, not too sharp roasted bitterness, dryish but not so much as an actual dry stout, long finish with elegant spicy hoppiness, subtle.

Black, with dense, even and persisten brown head. Aroma of roasted malt and dark chocolate. Similar taste. Round mothfeel. One of the best stouts I’ve tasted.
