Young’s London Stout is brewed with Young’s secret yeast culture and oatmeal to deliver a smooth and creamy beer which has a richer and slightly sweeter taste than Irish stouts.

Keg at the Burnaby Arms, Bedford. Mid-brown with a reddish tinge. Slightly translucent with a huge tight khaki head. Scent is of heavily roasted coffee, just short of burnt. A slight metallic tinge spoils what would otherwise have been an ambrosial aroma. Taste is deliciously sweet and slightly spicy. Long bittersweet finish with a slightly sour note reminiscent of dry Irish stouts. Velvety smooth but slightly thinner mouthfeel than I’d like. Overall, this kicks into touch Guinness and its imitators.

Sample from 50 cl. bottle, B.B. August 2007. Near black with ruby hues. Small, creamy tan head. Roasted aroma with fruits, chocolate, faint smoke and coffee. Diacetyl - basement aroma. Medium body, creamy texture. Finishes bitter with roasted notes. Some bitterness after all! Does not age with grace, drink it fresh.

It takes a bit of cajoling my jaded American palate to find the charms in this ultra-English, ultra-retro (by a century or two) Oatmeal Stout. Big, espresso-like roastiness and a bitter, charred chocolate finish? Nope. Sweet tea-flavored root beer and chocolate-dusted buttered toffee? Uh, well, yeah. The finish has a mild Anglo-funk that flares momentarily but gets squished back down by the bubbly texture. Not my favorite stout, but smile-inducing nonetheless. (12/08)

Bottle. Pitch black with a tall, dark brown head. Fine and foamy. Slightly burnt, milky aroma. Very rich flavor, not overly burnt, but good roasted malt. Creamy, slightly milky but not sweet. A dry finish, though not at all overpowering. A good stout, but not really that interesting, especially compared to the double chocolate. It is smooth and easy to drink, though, with a decent balance.

Roasted malt and date aroma, not very strong. Black pour, thick tan head, good glass adherence. Dry, comfortable mouthfeel. Bland tasting. Bark and charcoal are barely discernible beyond midpalate and hints of cola are on the front. There is improvement as the glass warms, but it never quite does it for me.

16.9oz bottle-pours a rich light brown head and black color. Aroma is mild dark malt-chocolate/cocoa powder. Taste is somewhat sweet dark malt-chocolate/cocoa powder/light molasses, roasty, oatmeal, secondary/faint hops bite. Smooth, nice beer. Thanks to jwc215(BA) for sharing.
