A combination of six malts, Fuggles and Mosaic hops, and a blend of spices, black treacle and laverbread from the Welsh coast creates a beer dark chestnut in colour. It has aromas of mulled spice, orange and mango, and sweetness from the treacle that complements the warmth from the cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger and chilli.

330ml bottle. Clear. dark amber colour with small, frothy, half-way lasting, minimally lacing, white head. Herbal spicy, grassy hoppy aroma, hints of thistle, juniper, laurel, a touch of cinnamon. Taste is dry, herbal spicy, thistle, juniper, laurel again, a very cautious touch of cinnamon; light, quite watery. So so.

Cask @ Stubbing Wharf, Hebden Bridge. Clear copper coloured ale with a creamy head. Has a light sugary aroma and taste, with a mild sweetness you might expect from this. Just about a winter ale, but a little thinner and crisper than you might expect in this style.

Tap at the King William IV. Poured a clear copper colour with a bubbly white head. The flavour is moderate bitter with a strong hop bitter, light earthy palate and a long bitter finish. Medium bodied with soft carbonation.

Cask at Haymarket. Pours clear copper, decent white head. Very big christams cake aromas, good spiciness, with mixed peel and stewed fruit and malt. Lovely. Taste has a touch of spice, more malt/fruitcake sweetness and a nice clean finish. Oily texture, in a good way. Best British Christmas beer of the season so far for me.

Cask @ Falcon, Clapham Junction. Dark copper. The aroma is enticing, of heavy malts with some orchard fruit. Some nice malt is the taste: sweet with a bit of sour. Fairly uniform taste profile. Not too exciting but certainly a decent well-rounded seasonal.
