Yearly, ending in 2017, we brewed Fluxus to celebrate the anniversary of our first beer sold—July, 1995. The name Fluxus is Latin for “continuous change” and in the spirit of change, every year we brew Fluxus with a different recipe.

Allagash Fluxus is a beer of continuous change. Brewed differently every year to commemorate our anniversary, this year’s Fluxus is a porter brewed with a blend of 2-row, coffee and chocolate malts with blood orange pulp and zest. It was hopped using Perle, Tettnang and Glacier varieties. It was then fermented with a Belgian Abbey yeast.

The resulting beer is dark brown in color with chocolate and roasted notes throughout the flavor and aroma. The blood orange has a subtle presence in the aroma and the zest expresses itself in the mouth-drying finish by leaving a lingering bitterness. This full bodied ale was the creation of Allagash brewer Patrick Saville, lover of heavy metal, beer and all things dark.

Bottle, 75cl, at Novare Res, Portland, Maine. A more or less black one, topped by a finger thick dark beige head. It’s lightly roasted on the nose, with a faint malty-sour touch. Dark dried fruits, raisins mostly, some dark chocolate and coffee, but not much. It’s full bodied, quite dry and soft on the palate. The flavor is pretty much the same, but with more focus on the chocolate. Lasting chocolate finish with a funky touch, prunes and coffee notes. Lovely this one too. 150609

Bottle @ home. Thanks to Lukaduke for sending ! Pours a pretty clear brown appearance with a lasting brown head. The aroma is actually pretty roasty, a touch smoky, and has some coffee. Kind of nutty and chalky and husky. The orange citrus comes through in the flavor. Some influence from the Belgian yeast. Fairly dry and chalky. Fairly dry. Ehhh, ok.

Draft @ Ale house in Amesbury, MA. As well as bottle, score is a combo of both versions. Aroma is cocoa powder, Allagash house yeast, and caramelized sugar. The draft sample I didn’t get any hints of citrus at all and my two buddies who had it right next to me said the same. In the bottle the citrus was there but very faint. And I mean just a glimmer. Most of the flavor is ashy, dry malts. Roasted. The body is on the lighter side of medium with a dry texture. If you have a bottle drink it soon, don’t think it will hold much longer. I feel my bottle sample was better than the draft.

Fare thee well Josh tasting at Bruce’s. Opaque dark brown beer, good pale tan - cream head. Palate is light and airy. Mild fine carbonation. Dry smooth and light dark malt. Light fruity tang. Mild esters. Light dry finish. A passable Porter but also an expensive let down. Was expecting so much more than this from Allagash.

Bottle at Josh’s Farewell Tasting, thanks to Kenny, 20/02/14. Light black with a bog old tan head that dissipates to a covering. Nose is light pastic, cocoa powder, bitter roast, ripe fruit pangs. Taste carries a little more depth, earthy cocoa, light spice, dark pitted fruits. Medium bodied, light prickly carbonation - a little overcooked here, semi drying close. Ok porter but no great, can’t say I was picking up the orange much either.

Bottle shared in London for Josh’s farewell do. Thanks, Kenny. Pours clear brown with a frothy beige head. Lots of well toasted bread on the nose, some dusty cocoa. Medium sweet flavor, more dark bread, light cocoa, a bit of dried dark fruits. Medium bodied with fine, massaging carbonation. Sweet finish, touches of Belgian yeast, candied sugar, toasty bread. Decent.
