Dubbed ‘The original craft beer’, this dangerously drinkable legend has been in the family since 1899, when Tom, the old brewery cat, was sketched into immortality by Robinsons’ Head Brewer as he waited for the ale to ferment. 120 years on and it’s still the same great tasting ale, brewed to the same award-winning recipe. Rich, malty and warming, Old Tom has a distinctive deep port wine finish, with bitter hops balanced by the heady aromas of dark fruit.

Bottle. Dark brown with shades of black. Lovely head with some lacing. Aroma of dark (dried) fruits and malts Taste is the same plus toffee, caramel and hints of liquorice. Finish showcases British hops. Strong carbonation. Balanced and nice. I clearly remember being absolutely overwhelmed by this one as a young lad, now it's just decent.

0.33 l bottle from 'EDEKA Preller' (Breckerfeld), bottled in October 2016. Clear, dark ruby with a thin, frothy, almost stable, light beige head. Sweetish-malty, slightly roasty and a bit vinous aroma of raisins, prunes, caramel and some chocolate. Quite sweet, moderately bitter, malty, slightly fruity, a little roasty and a bit vinous taste of caramel, raisins, prunes, some chocolate and a touch of oak, followed by a medium long, moderately bitter, slightly roasty and a little tart finish. Medium to full body, slightly creamy and moderately effervescent mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Good one!

Pours dark brown, not black but brown - with some matching beige foam on top. Nose has lots of camel, light sourish note to it, more sweet caramel with a bit of roast and some dried dark fruit sweetness. Taste has some light bitterness coming out at first, just for a moment before it succumbs to the caramelly sweetness that this beer is all about. Light roast, lots of caramel, burnt sugar and burnt rye bread toast. To be honest, not my favourite flavours - but in here, they actually are blending well together and succeed in forming a quite characterful mixture. Dry caramelly burnt sugar finish with a touch of tartness. Living classic.

Clear red-brown beer, thin head. Odour is burnt toffee, malt and almost wine-y fruit. Complex malty base to it, slightly tangy fruit, burnt toffee again, a hint of chocolate in the finish which makes it feel a bit richer. Very drinkable... other than the strength!

Aus der Flasche im 2017-09 getrunken. Irgendwie eine leicht gehopfte Mischung aus ein Bitter mit leichter Frucht und ein paar Röstnoten eines Porters. Nicht schlecht.

A lovely opaque colour in the glass and a small head. The taste was quite overwhelmingly molasses and treacle, but there was still an underlying bitterness of burnt malt and some hops. The mouthfeel was thick and oily and I am still trying to determine if I liked it, or found it slightly unpleasant. It was a good beer, but it won’t go on the repeat shopping list.
