Draught @ Waterfront Ale House. Inky black with small tan creamy head, mocha aroma, thin body, chocolate taste with alcohol undertones, low carbonation, long finish with bitter aftertaste. Did not get the licorice at all.

12 ounce bottle thanks to the infamous Dave W. Thanks! Pours a clear dark brown with a large foamy brown head. Good head retention. Aroma of chocolate, coffee, roasted malt, mild anise. The taste is chocolate, nuts, roasted malt, caramel, hints of anise. Medium bodied, decent balance, good beer, though the apples and cinnamon don’t make a dent here.

4oz pour at the brewery an opaque black with some frothy, beige head. Nose has plenty of roasted malt, burnt toast, coffee beans, some dark chocolate, molasses, a little bit of raisin, a little bit of plum, some orange, some mild spice. Flavor has plenty of sticky malt, orange peel, a bit of black pepper, toasted bread, brown sugar, caramel, a bit of caramelized apple, some black currant too. Full bodied with just a hint of alcohol. Very nice beer.

Tap at Governors Island Brew Fest, 2010. Pours black with a tan, light head. Good roasted malt nose with coffee and milk chocolate. Flavor begins with some roasted malt sweetness, light mocha and some hard mineral notes. Light in body with fine carbonation. Finishes with more charred malts and faint, dry bitterness. Not too shabby.

Dark roasted malt and tar aroma. Black , with a thin yellow head, good lacing. Dry roasted malt flavor, but finishes a bit sweeter. Good mouthfeel. Transitions from a dry irish stout to almost a milk stout. Not as complex as billed, but enjoyable.
