Bottle @ ZEBF 2015. Typical Bourbon ba RIS, has all the notes of vanilla, roasted malt and cacao. Not bad, just a bit standard, (or perhaps I’m spoiled)

Bottle sampled at ZEBF ’15. Pours very dark brown with a small ring tan head. Aroma of raisins, caramel, vanilla, bourbon, overripe dark fruits and toffee. Flavour is heavy sweet and moderate bitter. Full bodied with soft carbonation. Nice, but actually getting more barley wine like than stout.

On tap at Craft&Draft. Black colour, thin beige head. Aroma of lots of bourbon, whisky, wood, vanilla, booze, some chocolate, roasted malts. Flavour is very sweet, malty, chocolate brownies, bourbon, vanilla, light bitter finish. Way too sweet for me. Medium bodied at best.

Tap @ Craft & Draft as Marble Imperial Russian Stout Bourbon BA, tick. Dark color, short frothy brownish head. Aroma of heavy bourbon, slight roasted, hint of smoke, vanilla, booze, chocolate. Quite sweet and heavy on the bourbon next to a bit thinnish roast and coffee flavor of the base beer. Base beer is a bit too thin and lacks creamy power to handle the aging on the barrel, which was way too long in my opinion. Big sipper.

Tap @ In De Wildeman. Black color. Uneven beige head. Aroma’s: bourbon (not too strong), wood, fresh hops. Retronasal: bourbon, vanilla, sweet, toffee, light bitterness, some red fruit. Flavor is moderate sweet, moderate bitter, some roast. Rather strong alcohol feel, warming. Full bodied, dense mouth feel. Finishes somewhat dry, roasted, moderate bitter. Good!

Draught @ Van Moll Brewpub. Opaque black color, average sized light brown head. Aroma is malts, roasted malts, earthy. Bourbon? Hmm not really there.. Taste malts, roasted malts, earthy, bitter, dry. Again, where is the bourbon? Medium body, low to average carbonation.

Nose is strong on the bourbon, with vanilla, cherry, oddly it has a note that really reminds of pastry from a Mr Kipling pie, a slight vinous sherry note sitting at the bottom. Not a lot coming from the base stout - it all seems powered by the barrel. Taste is lots of bourbon, vanilla, booze, sweet bourbon notes, a little chocolate emerges from the stout, and maybe a touch of dark fruit in the finish. Mouthfeel is very full and the booze is well hidden. I have to say this beer is a little underwhelming, the bourbon dominates massively, drowning out the imperial stout rather than complimenting.
