In 1842, our first Brewmaster Josef Groll brewed a beer unlike any other. His crisp, refreshing golden lager was made with local ingredients: sweet Moravian barley, delicately bitter Saaz hops, soft Pilsen water, and bottom-fermenting H-strain yeast. Groll named this special beer after the city where he brewed it, Pilsen, where we still brew the same beer today. Over the last 178 years, pilsner-style lager has become the world’s most popular beer, with seven out of 10 beers in the world imitating Groll’s innovation. There are many pilsner-style beers out there, but only one original.

Dark yellow, with an initially frothy but quickly dissipating head. Earthy, coppery and spicy nose. Malty sweet up front with a nice balanced lingering bitterness. Hint of lemon in the mouth, slightly floral in the middle. A classic.

Poured from the tap at Pilsner Urquell Original Restaurant (at the airport). Clear gold with white head. Clean and crisp, slight grain and grass hops, also has a touch of a metallic taste.

Bottle. 18k golden pour with a medium white head that has fair retention. Aroma id mild with grains, breads and a bit of sawdust. The taste, like the aroma, features, breads and grains with a nice blast of spicy noble hops. Bitterness is moderate and works well with the grains. The palate is light and the carbonation prickly. Overall: Just fantastic. I bought a six pack with great reservation as I have not had this beer in about ten years. I was delighted to discover that it is still as good as ever. In my eyes, the perfect pils.

Klar gyllen farge med hvitt skum. Lukter malt, gress.

A beer I thought I had rated long ago. Not the case. I bought a 12 oz bottle of Pilsner Urquell at the local HEB recently, have it opened and pouring into my New Belgium globe glass. It arrives a bright yellow-gold with a slender head of snow white foam that provides some lacing. I smell grain, biscuit and a bit of lemon. The taste is crisp and dry with citrus, malt, white bread and hay. Not a beer that stands out but I think the style determines that.
