Ingredients: Malts: British Pale Ale Malt, Cara Malt, Malted Wheat. Heather, Bogmyrtle (Sweet Gale).

The Brotherhood have been guardians of the ancient Gaelic recipe for "leann fraoich" (heather ale) since 1988 and are proud to be the only brewery still producing this unique style of beer and distributing it world wide. A light amber ale with floral peaty aroma, full malt character, and a spicy herbal finish - This beer allows you to literally pour 4000 years of Scottish history into a glass.

Into the boiling bree of malted barley, sweet gale and flowering heather are added, then after cooling slightly the hot ale is poured into a vat of fresh heather flowers where it infuses for an hour before being fermented.

11.2 oz bottle into dimpled mug. Bought the Historical Ales of Scotland gift pack at a convenience store in Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho at a bargain(Fairway for those who know the area). Pours an orangeish yellow hue with a fast collapsing head. Aroma is floral--I smell honeysuckle (is that what heather smells like?), strawberry shortcake. Flavor is grainy. Mostly sweet with a hint of bitterness in the finish. High carbonation and light-bodied. A tad watery. Other than the historical aspect, this beer isn’t all that interesting.

Bottle (opened thinking it was something else). Very cloudy amber with a coat of off-white head. Aroma full of flowers, young ginger, herbs gone to seed. Tastes of herbal honey and lovely rainwater. Floral and lively. Interesting and nicely balanced.

Bottle at Pizzeria Paradiso. Light spice, but a bit out of balance. Interesting, but not sure I would try this one again.

Originally rated January 2006. Third of four brews from this brewer. Came in a gift pack, given by Buddybeer. Pours a honey-amber colour. Aromas of caramel malt, oranges and the same grains used in their gooseberry brew. Notes of prunes and spices. Apples in the taste, with some chocolat malt. Refreshingly crisp, with a lingering dry aftertaste. Pretty decent amber ale. Re-rated with a fresh one from their 2010 gift-pack (best before DEC 2011). Beautiful off-white head that is creamy and sticks a lot to the glass. Very smooth and silky mouthfeel. A nice smooth ale (and much better when fresh).

24/08/2010 From Bottle at home in a pint glass. Pale orange in colour. pours with a nice effervescence, but the head doesn’t last long. The aroma is really pleasing, a sort of caramel toffee banana. The taste does not live up to the aroma, it is distinctly average. 814310 Bottle at from a gift. A clear orange amber coloured pour with a lastring creamy beige head. Aroma is cola cubes, toffee, hint of banana, grass , lavender. Flavour is composed of pale stale malts, hay, wishy washy butterscotch, floral notes, spicy finish. Palate is semi creamy, wishy washy, moderate carbonation. meh.

Bottle. Very herbal aroma. Low carbonation, very smooth. Sweet, with lots of herbs—very perfumey. It is definitely overdone. I cant’ really take this much herb in my beer.
