Every year on the 24th of February, the birthday of "Charles the fifth", the Brewery brews the Gouden Carolus "Cuvee of the Emperor" in a limited quantity and with an eye on the highest quality and tradition. This unique brewing, with only extra fine Belgian hops and with a higher alcohol level, guarantees a better evolution in the time, than the already known Gouden Carolus Classic. The 75cl bottles are closed with a quality cork. Excellent to store several years. This exceptional ale ages well, developing a refined complexity and intense aromas. With powerful notes of roasted malts, caramel and plums, its surprisingly soft and fruity aroma combines a warm roundness with a refreshing taste. An imperial brew to cherish and enjoy in moderation.

75 cl corked 2017 bottle at Be Hoppy, Madrid. Pours very dark, yet shinny, reddish brown. Tan head is thick and long-lasting. Aroma is super-intense: lots of cherry, cherry jam and cherry drops, also coffe, vanilla and cola jellies. Mouthfeel is silky, with a delicate fizziness and a superb sourness that perfectly balances the mild bitterness. Round, long-lingering, coffee-loaded finish. Only reason it's not getting a perfect score is because I think it will develop its somewhat juvenile scents to a supreme degree over time (I'll have to taste it in five or more years time.)

Grunt fill from Albertsons. Right from the start, this a gorgeous beer. Ruddy brown with small cap of beige head. Fruity, sugary aroma wafts up, sweet. Taste follows with figs and raisins, prunes, and molasses. Just plain exquisite and smooth.

Bottle, 0.75l. Clear deep ruby pour, thin off-white layer on top, medium lasting. Some lacing. Malty sweet on the nose with caramel and toffee. Also very nice fruity presence, notes of cherry and plum. Medium body, soft carbonation. Smooth mouthfeel, somewhat light at first but has this creamy feel that makes it appear really smooth. Aroma is medium sweet with slight sour fruitiness. Some alcohol bitterness towards the finish. Aroma of caramel, toffee, brown sugar. Cherry and plums, liquorice and raisins. Very subtle layer of cocoa underneath. Finishes with lingering warming alcohol presence, slight burn on the tongue, mildly bitter. Overall, very smooth and well balanced brew. One to savor slowly sip by sip.

Bottle from Dranken Geers, Oostakker. Shared with Anke. 2017 edition.
Pours hazy dark brown with a big, foamy, lasting, tan head. Intense aroma of raisin, plums, candied fruits, figs, yeast, caramel, (light roasted) malt, spices, liqueur and brown sugar. It tastes medium to heavy sweet with hints of licorice, dark fruits and syrup, then light hoppy and spicy bitter; sweetish and herbal finish, with warming (whisky or wine) alcohol. Full body, slick/syrupy texture, fizzy carbonation. Complex and extremely tasty. A delight!
