Schwarzbier ~ which translates to Black Beer, is a German lager, very dark brown in color with a tan colored head. Coffee aromas mingled with nutty malt and a touch of caramel grace the nose. The palette is rich, smooth and clean, very malty with roasted notes apparent. The finish is lingering with a touch of residual sweetness and very mildly bitter.

Specifications: O.G. 12.2 degrees plato, T.G. 2.2 degrees plato, IBU = 25, ABV ~ 5.2%.

Schwarzbier is brewed with Pale Malt, Crystal 60, Munich, Carafoam special; German tradition & Oregon grown Sterling hops. Lagered for 6 weeks after it is attenuated with Czech Pilsner yeast. This beer is unfiltered ~ Prost!

Sampled on draft at Smokin’ Joes in Pittsburgh PA this beer poured a black color with a medium sized dark brown head. The aroma was dry, bitter and roasty with notes of coffee and floral hops. The flavor was dryish, roasty, toasty and a touch malty with notes of chocolate, coffee and strong floral hops. The finish was long, roasty and hoppy. Medium body. Solid.

Under the alias of Pauls Dark Lager, tap at TFD Boise. Pours a dark brown with a large tan head. Great lacing. Aroma is roasty and malty with hints of smoke. The smokiness is more pravalent in the flavor, but sits well in balance with the roast and bits of coffee. Some light bittersweet cocoa notes.

Tap @ OTH. Pours deep black, with tan / brownish head.Aroma is roasted and coffeeish. Taste, light oats on the palate, lightly roasted with a light bitter hoppy finish. Very tasty lager, with a dry mouthfeel. Well balanced, awesome feel between the dark malts and hops, make this one an easy drinker.

On draught at Redbones, 10/23/2005. Typical Rogue appearance - Moderate amount of well-retained head, lacing, unfiltered haziness. Color is a deep black with a light mahogany brown edge to it and slight dark auburn tinges on the edge of the glass. Head is off-white. Aroma dosent show much hoppiness, there is a dry, light floral nature, a bit of juicy greenness, but forturnately, no citrus that I can find. Malts are creamy sweet, with brown sugar, milk chocolate and chocolate covered raisins. Flavor begins on a sugary-sweet crystal malt note, which I normally don’t like, but Rogue can do American crystal malts without making them taste boring and "hard" for lack of a better word. A chewy chocolate fudge slowly grows on the palate, while the roast, not far behind, is lightly done and in good taste. Finish has a nice crisp lager yeast, not biting by any means, and you arent going to mistake this for Kostritzer, but clean and noticeably close to-style. The mouthfeel is very chewy, without being heavy, and the light chocolate and nutty roast notes play off of each other nicely. Medium body with no alcohol apparency and low carbonation.
