Basilius is a dark copper-colored beer with 7% alc.. This thirst-quenching beer gets its soft caramel aromas exclusively from the barley malts used. The hop varieties Amarillo and Saaz, on the other hand, provide a subtle fruity (orange) and spicy aroma and a refined bitterness. EBC 57. Density 16° Plato.

Dubbel commissioned by the Brugs Bierinstituut, with off-white, stable head and deep bronze colour. Strongly malty aroma with caramel and nuts, some pear, liquorice, toast; taste at first a dark, rounded fruitiness, vaguely sweetish, bit of a metallic touch, caramelly and nutty malts, finishing in a light toasted bitter. Not very well-balanced to my taste.

Clear red copper colour, nice frothy tan head, stays a while, thin layer remains, not much lacing. Sweet malty aroma, somewhat vinous, brown sugar, caramel, roasty, nuts, dark fruit syrup, raisins, orange peel, spices. Medium roasty sweet and bitter taste, hint of chocolate. Full-bodied, creamy texture, soft carbonation, nice bittersweet finish with spicy notes, malty bitterness at the end, good.

18th Oct 2012 on-tap in Daisey’s ’t Brugs Beertje: good deep amber/brown body, tan coloured head that stayed a while. Burnt sugar and honey in both the nose and taste: so a bit sweet then! Belgian style yeast esters and flavours calmed it down a bit but other sweet notes also came and went during my tasting: namely candid fruits, brown sugar and caramel. The alcohol was well hidden by the sweet brew; it did have a mild hop bitterness under the surface and towards the end of each sip it was easy to find. A nice easy drinking beer for 7.0% ABV.
