The Witte Zwaan is a cloudy beer with a deposit of 30% wheat malt supplemented with 2 pilsner malts. The aromas are convincingly spicy due to the use of chamomile and a German hop, namely Hallertau Perle. In addition, the yeast provides the fruity aroma of banana with a sweet touch of acacia honey to finish.

Bottle @ Brugs Beertje, Brugge. Hazy yellow to light orange color, medium sized white to off-white head. Smell and taste wheat, lightly herbs or spices, a little sweet. Average body and carbonation. Hmm pretty average and not really what I think a Belgian White should be.

Brugge Beer Festival 2014: a beer with ’chamomile’ (a daisy tea?) and Pilsner Malts with the brew kettle. No wonder I didn’t really take to it! Golden orange with a slight haze, on top a white crown of bubbles. The nose is of mild wheat/grains and yeast esters, maybe a citrus hint if you sniff long and hard enough. Taste followed the smell to the letter, wheat, other grains and yeasty: a typical Belgian Witbier but without the spiciness or fruitiness you’d expect. I’m not huge fan of the style anyway, so this wasn’t my cup of tea. My only mistake of the day!

Very hazy orange colour, small off-white head, dissipates quickly, only a meagre rim remains. Yeasty grain aroma, dough, citrus and lemon notes, some coriander, camomile, soap. Mild sweet and sour taste with bitter undertones, bit watery kinda thin mouthfeel. Low carbonation, light to medium body, slightly more bitterness in the aftertaste.

Although inoffensive this white beer has little depth of flavour and serves well only for refreshment. Overall, bland.

Bottle sample @ 5de Brugs Bier festival.
