This traditional beer from the South-West of Flanders awakens your taste buds with a massive wallop. Once your senses get over that initial shock, the experience a complexe mix of winey aromas, red fruits, wood and green apple. Sourness dominates in taste. This red brown beer is a blend of old and young beer, aged in different oak barrels. Each barrel gives a different taste, but through the proces of blending, a similar style is obtained. Once botteled, the beer ripens for six months to further develop its finesse and delicate aromas.

Bottle from the Grumpy Goat, Reading. Hazy chestnut colour with a beige head. Tart and sour from the off, with wood, raspberry, redcurrant, damp barns and vanilla. There's quite a fresh summery thing going on amongst all the old woodiness Dry in the finish. It's been a while since I've had a beer in this style and I rather enjoyed it.

33cl bottle, as Oud Bruin Hip Hops, from Abeervinum, Rimini, Italy. Pours reddish brown, almost plum, with practically no foam. Aroma is delicate vinegar, balsamic. Body is fairly dense with moderate carbonation. A full mouth. Taste is markedly sour, maybe a bit of initial sweetness. Finish is fairly short.

Draft at the Handlebar. Deep mahogany pour, almost flat. Aroma is pit fruit, cherries, wood and funk. Taste is soft, gentlw tart notes, some drying of the gums. Pretty damn smooth. Very accessible.
