Barrel Aged Eliza is the Bourbon and Cabernet barrel aged version of our New Orleans Iced Coffee inspired Imperial Milk Stout. We took all of the ingredients you would find in a cup of iced coffee in New Orleans, added a complex and nutty single origin coffee from our favorite local roaster Catahoula Coffee Co., French Chicory, organic cane sugar, and then a hefty amount of milk sugar to give Eliza a thick and creamy texture in line with the drink that inspired it. Much like the ghost ship that inspired its name, our Eliza disappeared for quite some time. Lucky for us it was hiding in a Four Roses Bourbon and Argot wine barrels. Upon its reappearing we blended Eliza to get a unique balance of roasty chicory, oaky bourbon, and bright red wine notes. The already massively bodied Imperial Stout has just the right amount of fortitude to stand up to its time served in the barrels and the oak tannins it brought back with it, creating a one of a kind barrel aged experience.

Can thanks to Chow. Pours a very dark brown with medium beige head that lasts. The aroma is strong roast, cocoa, wood, tobacco. Medium body, roasted malt, dark chocolate, chicory, bourbon, wood, bitter finish, very good.

Can to snifter. Pours inky black. Viscous. Very minimal brown head. Coffee and chicory predominate. Slight roast. Lactose works to hold things back. Slight vanilla. I didn’t perceive anything from the wine barrel.

On tap at the brewery. Aroma has a lot of charred oak notes from the barrel. Some moderate chocolate notes with some balanced roast character. Light milk notes. Pours a black with dark brown hues on the edges and a small, thick mocha head that recedes to the edges where a bit lingers. Flavor is fairly sweet with some light lactose notes. Good chocolate notes with some nice coffee and chicory. Moderate barrel notes that are less dominant than in the aroma. Some light bourbon notes. Moderate bitterness. Some lingering bourbon, chicory, oak and sugar. Mouthfeel is medium full bodied with medium carbonation. Low,but slightly present astringency and medium low alcohol warmth. Overall, an alright beer but the charred oak notes are too strong, especially in the aroma. Nice, sweet coffee character though.

On tap at Fieldwork. It pours a dark brown color with a light brown head. The aroma is smoky and oaked. Lots of dry oak with some background smoke, cocoa and coffee. Nice. The flavor has intense dry oak with good sweet figgy dark fruit, hints of brown sugar, vanilla, cocoa and cream. Finishes sweet but with a pleasant rum-like note. Very smooth, creamy and sweet but not too cloying or syrupy. A treat.

Tap. Pours opaque black, small tan head, good lacing. Aroma is hints of bourbon, charred wood, anise, roasty, molasses, burned malt, lactose. Flavor is medium sweet, light plus bitter, huge anise, black strap molasses, light vanilla, tons and tons of charred wood. Medium body, creamy mouthfeel. I am not sure I have ever tasted a woodier beer.
