  Strong Ale - English Regular
Score
6.40
ABV: 6.5% IBU: 26 Ticks: 139
First brewed in 1998 to celebrate Shepherd Neame's tercentenary, this copper-bronze, bottle conditioned beauty is an intense yet uniquely intricate offering thrice-hopped during the brewing process. This adds rich resinous notes and spikes of citrus to a moreish strong ale already rife with notes of liquorice, Masala wine, caramel and spicy orange. A frisson of dark fruit freshens the finish.

Rocky off white head stayed on a slowly carbonating copper coloured body. Fruity English hops & malt aroma. Medium bodied, soft on the palate with a lively back. Well balanced with fruity hops, malts, berries, spices & a sweet finish. What a lovely pint.

500ml bottle straight from the fridge. Amber colour with thin head. Aroma of toffee, hops and mixed fruit. Low carbonation. Tastes very sweet with flavours of dried fruits, malt and caramel. Less bitterness at the end than I was expecting. Stronger than what I am used to but nice and quite a warm feeling when it goes down. I can see this as a beer alternative to mulled wine in winter. My first sip of this style, I may try this brew again in 6 months at room temperature.

Bottle from ASDA Very little aroma at all to this one – maybe some hops ? Pours a clear orange-brown with (very briefly) a frothy white head. Sweet malts on the tongue, followed by some ginger, raisins and walnuts. A fiery bitter finish, with some alcoholic strength finally showing in the throat. Reasonable, but not outstanding.

500ml bottle from Stonemanor, The British Store near Brussels. F: medium, egg-white, average retention. C: amber to pale coppery, totally clear yet bottle conditioned. A: weak caramel and fruity, bit floral, biscuits. T: rich malty backbone but there is also glucose syrup to get the higher voltage, caramel, vaguely fruity, triple hopped so nice marketing, bit too simple and sweet with alcohol notes with some oxidized but English strong ale so ok, medium body and lower carbonation.

500ml bottle. Pours a clear bronze-amber with a medium, creamy, long lasting, ecru head that leaves curtains of lace. Sweet aroma of biscuit malt, caramel, butterscotch, baked red apple, light roast and floral hops. Sweet flavour of biscuit malt, toffee, baked red apples, faint roast and floral hops with a dry, mild bitter, metallic finish. Medium body with an oily texture and soft carbonation. Good.
