  Strong Ale - English Regular
Score

First brewed in 1998 to celebrate Shepherd Neame's tercentenary, this copper-bronze, bottle conditioned beauty is an intense yet uniquely intricate offering thrice-hopped during the brewing process. This adds rich resinous notes and spikes of citrus to a moreish strong ale already rife with notes of liquorice, Masala wine, caramel and spicy orange. A frisson of dark fruit freshens the finish.

Bottle. Asda. Bottle conditioned? Hmm. Camra says so, though. Must be right. Clear as a bell, copper colour. Ring and an island of pale beige bubbles. Nose has brown sugar. Some toffee apple. Light notes of fig and date. Taste is predictably sweet, with just a hint of vinous, fruity bitterness. Medium body. Low carbonation. A bit metallic, maybe. Fairly sweet finish. Ok as cheap boost, but not one I’d have again, unless I saw it on cask, in which case I’d jump on it.

500ml bottle into pint glass. Served at room temperature. Pours a glorious bronze colour with a foamy white head. Some patchy lacing. Medium carbonation. Smell of caramel malt, pepper, and dark fruit. Slight zing, full body. Finish is bitter with touches of malt, dried fruit and alcohol. Late on there's some drying herbal mintiness. Late night sipper.

Bottle. Amber with a near white head. Aroma of peach, bread, blackcurrant wine gums, bitter oranges. Surprisingly light bodied. Bittersweet with very English fruity hops and a drying bitterness. Evidently not a fashionable drop around here but I still like it.

Bottle at Star Inn, Guildford. 16/11/17. Sweet marzipan aroma. Dark brown. Thick frothy off-white head. Light-medium sweet. Some latent bitterness. Sweet berries and caramel. Some malt. Medium bodied. Slick. Average carbonation. Abrupt finish. Not too bad. Went down well.
