First brewed in 1998 to celebrate Shepherd Neame's tercentenary, this copper-bronze, bottle conditioned beauty is an intense yet uniquely intricate offering thrice-hopped during the brewing process. This adds rich resinous notes and spikes of citrus to a moreish strong ale already rife with notes of liquorice, Masala wine, caramel and spicy orange. A frisson of dark fruit freshens the finish.

Bottle from Seoul Plaza. Clear amber colour. Aroma burnt sugar, caramel, some alcohol. Taste has quite strong alcohol as well, otherwise plain caramelly sugary grainy maltiness. Not very drinkable. Average.

28th Aug 2015: 500ml bottle shared with my father at his place in Lincolnshire. Really enjoyed it, my sweet tooth finding the beer very palatable. Poured a clear amber/copper colour with an off white topping. Sweet malty molasses in the aroma. More molasses in the taste, yet the sweetness is tempered by a subtle hop presence (even if it has been ’thrice hopped’) that keeps the malts in check somewhat.

Bottle from Tesco. Drunk at home while listening to Fux’s chamber opera ’Dafne in Lauro’. Odd orangey-brown colour. Massive carbonation that quickly disappears from view. Caramel, wood and slightly sulphurous aroma. bitter, somewhat astringent tastewith a sweet almost citrussy hit at the end. Medium to long bitter finish. Body incredibly watery for the strength. Decent enough but not really my cup of tea.
