“When it’s done” is a phrase we’ve used to describe release dates for our beers for many years. When you’re putting the beer first, it just makes sense. Our anniversary is technically in February, but this unique Oat Wine style ale needed to age in High West Rye Whiskey barrels until, well… until it’s done. Here’s to Eight great years, and we’ll all be celebrating soon in our all new Destination Brewery.

The idea behind our anniversary line-up of beers was to give Todd, Surly’s Head Brewer, free rein to use whatever ingredients and methods he wanted to brew the beer. This year’s bottle artwork is a one-of-a-kind illustration collaboration between Todd and local artist Josh “Jawsh” Lemke.

This beer was designed for barrel aging, so it’s been a great opportunity to work with our friends at High West Distillery® in Park City. Utah. Brewed with Golden Promise and Aromatic malt Oats, and Milk sugar fermented in stainless steel then aged in High West Rye Whiskey barrels, this golden hued Oat-Wine style ale summons notes of spicy vanilla marshmallow and aromas of honey and whiskey.

750mL bottle shared by Willrunforbeer on 2/10/24, thanks, Brian. Clear amber, spotty, off-white bubbles on top. Mellow nose with soft rye, perfume, cherry and light spice. Mellow, no alcohol, no sign of lactose. Oats probably soften everything. Spicy rye, light floral notes with a medium, well-attenuated body and caramel-vanilla-toffee lingering. No booze. Not very complex, could use a bit more body, but no issues either.

750 ml bottle. Thanks Willrunforbeer on the share. The nose has oak, vanilla, and honey. Taste is similar to aroma with just a mild hint of wet cardboard in the finish. For the age, not bad at all!

Cellar clearer thanks Brian. Not bad for 10yrs old. Slight wet newspaper but still nice barrel notes.

Pours a rather murky, oaky brown, with big head (beer was gushing out of the bottle when opened). Aromas are whiskey, some spice, dark fruit. Flavors follow, with a smooth mouthfeel. The ABV is well-hidden in both aroma and flavor--no booziness overtaking everything.

'Oat wine', so a self-proclaimed version of barleywine with oat, aged in rye whisky barrels, an anniversary ale by this established and influential craft brewer in Minnesota. Huge thanks to tderoeck for sharing this gem, now several years old. Loose, off-white, thinnish, bubbly, open and eventually disappearing head on a cloudy, deep reddish bronze beer with copper hue. Rich bouquet of old tawny port, maple syrup, madera, pear compote, biscuit, old wrinkled apples, calvados, vanilla-scenting wet oak wood, rum-soaked cherries, dates, plum wine, almond, dry orange peel. Sweet onset, candied cherries and figs, softish carbonation, very light sourish undertone; biscuity and toffeeish malts with honeyish sweet edge, though nowhere cloying. This deep and rich maltiness, showing the unavoidable signs of oxidation in a most elegant, old port-like manner, eventually gets adorned by lovely vanilla-ish oak, lingering honey and caramel sweetness, complex dried fruitiness and warming, port-like alcohol, with a spicy orange peel-like twist to it. An exciting, highly elegant and very American barleywine from this powerhouse of essential U.S. craft brewing, which on top of that has apparently been aged absolutely beautifully. My cup of tea entirely, glad I discovered this one!
