A dark and interesting ale, combining fruity hoppiness with a dark, malty side. Is it a porter or maybe a mild? You decide?

Bottle from the Chesham Brewery Shop. Poured a dark chestnut colour with a thin beige head. Aroma of vanilla, raisons and chocolate. Pretty watery mouth feel for a porter. Flavours of dark malt, coffee and orange peal. Palate is slightly metallic with bitter espresso and spruce hops.

Bottle @ "Press Deans button tasting". A bit unclear amber to red color, small white head. Smell malts, a lot of herbs. Taste malts, herbs, maybe a bit sweetish. Average to medium body and carbonation. Hmm average.

500ml bottle BBD of before July 2013: poured at home into an Abbot Ale glass tankard on 5th June 2013. Looked good: very dark with a full, deep tan coloured head. Malty molasses rule the nose and taste, but there is more to this beer than just maltyness. There is a robustness to the malts flavours, yet subtle hints of hidden fruitiness and a hop bitterness below the surface. The label asks the question: is it a Porter or a Mild, itโ€™s a blend of both, too thin to be a Porter, but too rich for a Mild. A hybrid beer, the missing link between Porter and Mild maybe?
