Oats are used in the grist of this beer to give body and smoothness, enhancing the roasted barley, giving it complex flavours reminiscent of dark chocolate and coffee.

This is balanced by a fresh hop bitterness and dry silky finish.

50 cl bottle @ home. BBE 28.04.2014
Aroma has chocolate, some tar and distant peaty notes. Also some English hops, hints of hay and ash. Flavour has English hops, toffee, chocolate, ash, peat and some slightly salty licorice. Finishes with herbs. Smooth, althouth slightly watery palate. Decent.

Bottle. A colabrown beer with an almost medium and beige head. Aroma is quite mild and simple, roastiness, chalk and hint of fruityness. Taste is dry and roasted, some chalk, hint of coffee. Quite light bodied, low carbonation. Not very convincing beer, too mild and simple.

Bottle from Tesco Formby 210113
Black, thin ruby edges, nice frothy rich tan head, good lacing
Aroma - roasted malts, light chocolate, bit yeasty, dab of spicy hop
Taste - dark roasted malts, soft coffee and chocolate, touch of burnt crust, touch of dark fruits, not that complex
Palate - medium carb, thin to medium body, not as smooth as I expected for an oatmeal stout but texture fairly oily and quite creamy. Finish - roasted malts, some coffee grounds, bitter chocolate
Overall - Fairly bitter roasted stout, not that complex in the bottle, prob better on cask

(Cask at White Horse, Parsonโ€™s Green, London, 24 Nov 2012) Black colour with brief, beige head. Malty, roasted nose with coffee, dark chocolate, ashes and toasted oats. Malty, roasted taste with notes of coffee, chocolate, hints of ashes, toasty oats and a roasty bitterness in the finish. Rather light body, quite dry. Nice one.

Half-pint, hand-pulled at the Firs Club, Codsall on 17 Nov 2012. Very dark body: almost black in colour, with a good, deep biege/tan head of foam. The nose and taste were simular, dark chocolate and ground coffee being the main flavours I found. medium bodied for the style, neither rich or watery, just about right. The beer finishes with a mild bitterness that sets the mouth off towards a hop dryness and you wanting another gulp of the brew.

Cask. A deep red beer with no head. The aroma has notes of over ripe fruits and roasted malt. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt, caramel, and roasted malt, leading to a bitter finish.

Cask, brewpub. Dark brown with a thin head. Oaty, milk chocolatey aroma is pretty appetizing. Chocolate palate with mellow nutty coffee notes. Slightly acidity at the back cuts what is otherwise a creamy mouthfeel.
